In the past when they couldn’t write, they used simple symbols to send their messages. Some groups of North American Indians were good at 15 messages. For example, a small stone on top of a large one meant “This is the way.” If there was another small stone on the right, it meant “Turn right.” Some grass with a knot meant “Danger!” and so on. ‎ In forests of Africa, it was 16 to travel between villages. But drum could be heard from many kilometers away. So, some groups of Africans made their drums “ 17 ” like people.‎ The Incas of South America used to send messages by tying knots with ropes. Messages have been found, but 18 can understand what they mean. And the Egyptians used pictures as a kind of 19 , but only a few people were 20 to understand them.‎ Today, we also use a lot of symbols. When we are in a car and we see a red light, we stop the car. When a mother says to her child, “Eat your cake!” the child eats the cake. Sometimes the red light and the words of the mother are symbols. And the 21 , of course, is that the 22 way of communication between people is sound.‎ 初三调研考试英语试卷 第 11 页 共 10 页 There are more than 3,000 languages in the world today. I try to listen politely, but usually I’m busy thinking about my day. On this day, however, her talk was worth listening to.‎ ‎ “My father’s ill,” she said. I could see worry in her eyes. I had never seen her like this before. She always meets students with a smile.‎ ‎ With a sudden feeling of interest, I asked, “What’s wrong with him?”‎ ‎ With her eyes wet and her voice unusual, she answered, “Heart trouble.” Her eyes lowered as she continued, “I’ve already lost my mum, so I don’t think I can stand losing him.” I couldn’t answer. My heart ached for her.‎ ‎ I sat on the seat thinking of the great pain my own mother was thrown into when her father died.‎ ‎ I saw how hard it was, and still is, for her. She had a whole world of family and cares too.‎ 初三调研考试英语试卷 第 11 页 共 10 页 ‎ I shouldn’t have been so selfish. I paid no attention to Janie because she was a bus driver. But it’s good advice. People who wear seat belts are 45 percent less likely to be killed while riding in the front seat of a car.‎ The US government wants more seat belt laws. It says children aged 4 to 15 are often killed in car accidents. In 2005, there were 1,627 children aged 4 to 15 killed in car accidents. More than 1,000 of those children were not wearing seat belts. If they had been wearing seat belts, 500 of those children could be alive today.‎ These children are too old to be in safety seats, but they often sit in the back seat. Seat belt laws in many states, including Wisconsin, only require people in the front seat to wear seat belts. Children who aren’t wearing seat belts can be thrown out of the car. The risk of dying in an accident is three times greater if the person is thrown out of the car.‎ New laws could require children aged 4 to 8 to be in booster seats (加强座椅) in the car. Booster seats help seat belts fit children properly. Right now, only 5 percent of children aged 4 to 8 are seated in booster seats.‎ While parents have the choice of whether to wear seat belts or not, children are too young to make that choice. Even if you decide not to wear a seat belt, make sure your children are in seat belts and safety seats. It’s the law and it will save their lives.‎ ‎28. What does the sentence “Everyone gets sick of hearing that.” in the first paragraph mean?‎ ‎ A. No one likes to be ordered to wear seat belts.‎ B. All people may fall ill when they put on seat belts.‎ 初三调研考试英语试卷 第 11 页 共 10 页 C. Many people don’t care much about wearing seat belts.‎ D. None of the people knows it is a piece of good advice.‎ ‎29. Why were more than two thirds of 1,627 children killed in car accidents in 2005?‎ ‎ A. Because they weren’t using seat belts. ‎ B. Because they were sitting in the front seats of cars.‎ C. Because they were not old enough to sit in the car.‎ D. Because they were too careless when walking on the road.‎ ‎30. Which of the following can be the best title of this passage?‎ A. Traffic Laws to Pass B. Traffic Accidents Prevented ‎ C. Seat Belts for Children’s Safety D. Parents’ Choices for Children C ‎ Imagine this situation: A mother writes a note to her children and then leaves home for the day. The note says the children should prepare a meal for themselves. There are eggs in the house. Some are hard-boiled (煮老的), while the others are not. Both kinds of eggs look the same. How can the children know which is which, without breaking them?‎ One fifth grader, Samadhi, says she had to try more than one idea to tell the difference between the eggs. “It was difficult, but it was fun too. You get to do things yourself. You get to try new things. You don’t have to do what the teacher tells you to.”‎ Samadhi discovered that spinning the eggs solved the problem. Raw (生的) eggs spin more slowly than hard-boiled ones.‎ This mystery is called “The Eggcellent Idea”. It is one of 65 mysteries in the series. Each one takes about 90 seconds to read and requires students to solve it using their math and science knowledge.‎ Karen Rivera notes that the mystery series was the creation of Eric Yoder and his daughter Natalie. “When it was first written, the daughter was still a middle schooler,” Rivera says. “So it’s not just written for children, but it was actually written in part by the child herself. Every single mystery is written with characters who are children. The children are facing real world problems they need to solve, using their background knowledge on math and science.”‎ According to Rivera, the fact that the students are leaving the classroom, still talking about what they have done, tells her that they really made it real experience, something that they can work out and continue using in real life.‎ ‎31. What has Samadhi learned in solving the egg mystery?‎ A. The ability of doing things by herself.‎ B. The spirit of teamwork in solving the mystery.‎ C. The importance of learning math and science well.‎ D. The difference in speed of spinning raw and hard-boiled eggs.‎ 初三调研考试英语试卷 第 11 页 共 10 页 ‎32. What do we know about the mystery series?‎ A. 90 seconds is limited to solve each mystery.‎ B. The mysteries are about middle school life.‎ C. Natalie based the mysteries on her own life.‎ D. Every mystery requires children to face and solve problems around them.‎ ‎33. What does Rivera think of the mysteries?‎ A. Difficult. B. Practical. C. Interesting. D. Amazing. ‎ D ‎ Duke Ellington is known as one of the most important composers of his time, and his work has been enjoyed for more than 80 years by music lovers all over the world. During his lifetime Ellington turned musical sounds into many compositions, mostly in the style known as jazz.‎ The Early Years Duke Ellington was born in 1899 in Washington D.C. It wasn’t until Ellington was a teenager that his interest in music grew. He taught himself to play the piano by listening to local piano players. Sometime around 1916 Ellington began playing the piano at high school parties. Ellington realized that he enjoyed entertaining people with his music. He soon became a very popular musician playing at parties and other events in the Washington area. From the live shows, Ellington and his orchestra gained a national reputation (名声).‎ On the Road As Ellington’s popularity increased, he realized that his orchestra could do well on concert tours. They left the Cotton Club in 1931 and toured America and Europe almost continually for the next 43 years. During his trip, Ellington made recordings and continued to compose music. ‎ Duke Ellington played the piano, composed music, and led his famous orchestra for more than 50 years, until his death in 1974. Let’s look at some of the most common dreams. What do these dreams mean?‎ Falling You’re falling, falling, falling… and then you wake up. This dream is said to mean you are afraid of something or worried about something. There may be something in your life that is out of control and there is nothing you can do to stop it. Another explanation is that you may experience failure in something. Maybe you’re not doing well in school or work.‎ Taking an exam You suddenly realize you have to take an exam at that very moment. You might be running here and there to look for your classroom. Experts say this dream may mean you’re being tested about something or maybe you are facing a challenge.‎ Flying Dreaming that you are flying means you are on top of things. You are in control of the things that matter to you. It may also mean you have confidence in yourself and think no one or nothing can beat you.‎ Trying to run, but going nowhere You’re trying to run, but either of your legs won’t move or you simply aren’t going anywhere.‎ 初三调研考试英语试卷 第 11 页 共 10 页 ‎ Some experts think this dream means you’re trying to do too many things at once and can’t catch up or move forward.‎ In fact, unlike these dreams, there are also many strange dreams that experts may not be able to explain.‎ Descriptions of dreams ‎ 1 of dreams Falling ‎● You have something to fear or worry about.‎ ‎● You fail in something 2 schooling or work.‎ Taking an exam ‎● You’re being tested about something or facing something challenging.‎ Flying ‎● You’re able to control 3 matters to you.‎ ‎● You 4 yourself and think you can beat anyone or anything.‎ Trying to run, but going nowhere ‎● You’re trying to do too many things at once, which prevents ‎ you from 5 forward.‎ Conclusion: We know what some dreams are about, but not all the dreams.‎ 七、完成句子(本大题共9分,每小题1.5分)‎ 按所给的汉语,用英语完成下列句子,并将答案写在答题卡对应题号的横线上。‎ ‎1. ‎ I think these photos taken in Australia ___________________________________. ‎ ‎2. ‎ Amazing China shows China’s ____________________ documentary on screen. ‎ ‎3. ‎ Since the examination is around the corner, I have to ________________ the dancer.‎ ‎4. ‎ ‎________________ the native American’s that I once mistook him for an American.‎ ‎5. ‎ When travelling abroad, some people __________________than do some shopping. ‎ ‎6. ‎ 参考词汇:‎ 中央电视台(CCTV) 志愿者 (volunteer)‎ ‎ Wuxi Marathon has been a big event._____________________________________________‎ ‎____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________‎ 初三调研考试英语试卷 第 11 页 共 10 页 ‎ 英语参考答案 2018.4.25‎ 一、单项填空 (本大题共14分,每小题1分)‎ ‎1-5 CBCAA 6-10 DBDBA 11-14 CBDD 二、完形填空 (本大题共10分,每小题1分)‎ ‎15-19 AABDC 20-24 BBCDA 三、阅读理解 (本大题共26分,每小题2分)‎ ‎25-27 BBC 28-30 CAC 31-33 ADB 34-37CCDA 四、单词拼写 (本大题共8分,每小题1分)‎ ‎1. unusual 2. compare 3. neither/ nor 4. discovery ‎5. sadness 6. satisfied 7. widely 8. encourages 五、动词填空 (本大题共8分,每小题1分)‎ ‎1. was travel(l)ing 2. are expected 3. offering 4. have told ‎5. were cancel(l)ed 6. to mention 7. remained 8. will provide 六、阅读填空 (本大题共5分,每格1分)‎ ‎1.
