In 1971, readers around the world were astonished by some photographs which appeared in newspapers.
Hidden deep in the rainforests of an island in the Philippines, was an ethnic (种族的) ___1___
called the Tasaday. Not until that moment did anyone have any ___2___ of these people. They didn’t
have an agricultural economy; they hunted animals and __3___ fruit from the plants in the
rainforest. They carried tools made of stone, lived in ___4__ and wore clothes made of leaves.
Unknown until 1971, they 5 became world famous. After that, there were TV 6 and books
about them; people said their simple lives showed that human beings could be good and kind if
they were not 7 by modern life. Then after 1974 the region was closed by the government and
the world 8 about them.
In 1986, a Swiss journalist, Oswald Iten, decided to visit the Tasaday. The journey __9____
thick rainforests and across rivers was hard and dangerous. Mr. Iten was 10 killed by the
soldiers, villagers and businessmen who wanted to take the wood from the rainforest. Finally,
Mr. Iten 11 and found the caves of the Tasaday 12 . The people were living in nearby
huts and they were all 13 jeans and T-shirts, not leaves. He thought that perhaps they
were not an ethnic minority 14 .
When he 15 to Switzerland, Mr. Iten wrote about the Tasaday people in the newspapers. He
said he thought that they were just ordinary farmers, poor, but not 16 from anyone else.
He believed that in 1971, the government told “the Tasaday” to 17 they were native people
from thousands of years ago, so that tourists---and money---would start ___18 into the
region.
One group of experts said that they really were people who had no 19 with modern life before
1971; another group said they were just 20 the part. So who are these people, really?
Perhaps we’ll never really be sure.

Some personal characteristics play an important role in the development of one’s intelligence.
But people fail to realize the importance of training these factors in young people.
The so-called ‘non-intelligence factors’(非智力因素)include 1 feelings, will ,
motivation (动机), interests and habits . After a 30-year follow-up study of 8000 males , American
psychologists (心理学) 2 that the main cause of disparities in intelligence is not

habits , quite a number of teachers and parents don’t pay much attention to 5 these

3
blame either genetic (遗传的)factors , malnutrition ,(营养不良)or laziness , but they never
take 7 consideration these non-intelligence factors . At the same time, some teachers
don’t inquire into these, as reasons 8 students do poorly. They simply give them more
courses and exercises, or 9 criticize or laugh at them. After all, these students lose
self-confidence. Some of them just feel defeated and 10 themselves up as hopeless. Others
may go astray(迷途)because they are sick of learning . 11 investigation of more than
1,000 middle school students in Shanghai showed that 46.5 per cent of them were 12 of
learning , because of examinations , 36.4 per cent lacked persistence , initiative (主动)and
consciousness (正直地、谨慎的)and 10.3 per cent were sick of learning .
It is clear 13 the lack of cultivation (培养) of non-intelligence factors has been a
main 14 to intelligence development in teenagers . It even causes an imbalance between
physiological (生理的)and 15 development among a few students .
If we don’t start now to 16 the cultivation of non-intelligence factors, it will not
only affect the development of the 17 of teenagers, but also affect the quality of a whole
generation . Some experts have put forward 18 about how to cultivate students’
non-intelligence factors.
First, parents and teachers should 19 understand teenage psychology. On this basis , they
can help them to pursue (调动)the objectives of learning , 20 their interests and
toughening their willpower .
