Being a Canadian living in China for more than 10 years, I feel fortunate to share the
joys of Western and Chinese festivals with my Chinese wife, friends and students.
With Christmas here and the New Year round the corner, I like to walk in the streets of
Chinese cities to observe the moods of the people and share their cheers and tears. I have
noticed a great change in Chinese people’s attitude toward Western festivals, especially
Christmas and New Year. It is not uncommon nowadays to see Chinese people celebrating
with foreigners, some of them neighbors, others friends.
Shopping malls and department stores rise to the occasion and decorate their stores
with Christmas trees complete with the customary hangings, and buntings and festoons.
Public places, such as parks and squares, get a festive look. And Chinese people rush to the
stores offering season discounts and sales.
Educational institutions allow foreign teachers and staff days off to celebrate the
festivals, and some even organize parties so that their students can enjoy the festivities.
When I was living in Canada, people put a great deal of emphasis on the celebration of
Christmas and New Year. Consequently, I started sharing their enthusiasm. No matter
where I went, I couldn’t escape the spirit of the holidays, although I’ve always preferred to
celebrate festivals with my family.
During my stay in China, I organized special classes to tell my students about how
people in the West celebrate festivals. I have also encouraged them to exchange gifts as a
symbol of love toward each other and organized parties in the school to enjoy the occasion
with colleagues and students.
Here’s wishing everybody, regardless of religious beliefs, a merry Christmas and a
happy and p rosperous New Year.
25. Which of the following statements can be inferred from the article?
A. Chinese celebrate Western festivals forgetting their own ones.
B. It’s unusual for Chinese to celebrate festivals with foreigners.
C. All the staff in schools can have days off during a western festival.
D. The author is enthusiastically spreading the foreign festival culture.
26. What’s the author’s feeling of Chinese people’s attitude towards western festivals?
A. Discomfort. B. Indifferent. C. Delighted. D. Negative.
27. What’s author’s job in China?
A. Teacher. B. Tourist. C. Writer. D. Reporter.
28. The passage is mainly concerned with _____.
A. Chinese people celebrate western festivals generally.
B. Joys of western and Chinese festivals.
C. Malls and stores are decorated with Christmas trees.
D. Schools organize parties to celebrate the festivals.

When Duke University refused to accept Siobhan O’Dell, 17, by sending her a rejection
letter(拒绝信), she refused to take it quietly.
The teenager, from North Carolina, had applied to the famous college in her home state,
but in March she was sent a letter telling her she had failed. Mirroring the standard format
of college rejection letters, she wrote back, “Dear Duke University, thank you for the
rejection letter of March 26, 2015. After careful consideration, I regret to inform you that I
am unable to accept your refusal to offer me admission into the fall 2015 freshman class at
Duke.”
Her conclusion reads, "Therefore I will be attending Duke University’s 2015 freshmen
class. I look forward to seeing you then."
Speaking to a newspaper about the letter, Siobhan said, “They sent me a typical college
rejection letter saying this year they had an outstanding pool of applicants... blah, blah, blah.
It made me realize how much power universities have over students. High School graduates
labor over applications, stress over waiting, and sometimes cry over the answer. Then that’s
it.”
“The college has all the power. But what if that wasn’t it? What if we got to treat the
college like they treated us? I wanted to give them a taste of their own medicine.”
Officials at Duke were unmoved by the teenager’s courage and obvious intelligence.
They did eventually respond to her letter, but didn’t appear to share the joke and her sense
of humor, instead telling her that “We don’t simply reopen and review the file” and “It’s
very rare that we learn something that leads us to change our decision.” While Miss O’Dell’s
letter didn’t earn her a place there, it seems to have got the attention of students on campus,
and is even set to feature in the college newspaper.
However, all’s well that ends well for Siobhan O’Dell, who has now been accepted by
the University of South Carolina. “I’m going to major in biology and I look forward to going
to USC this fall.”
29. Siobhan O’Dell wrote to Duke University officials to _____.
A. inform them she would attend Duke anyway B. express her feelings in a
humorous way
C. make fun of them for the mistake they made D. demand of them to change the
decision
30. What was Duke University’s response to her letter?
A. They are moved by her courage and intelligence. B. They wrote a letter turning her
down again.
C. They ran a story about her in newspaper. D. They promised her to review her
file.
31. We can infer from the passage that _____.
A. officials at Duke don’t know how to appreciate humor
B. high school graduates are under too much pressure
C. students have little power over admission decisions
D. universities should not reject students’ application
D
You may not pay much attention to your daily elevator ride. Many of us use a lift
several times during the day without really thinking about it .But Lee Gray, PhD, of the
University of North Carolina, US, has made it his business to examine this ignored form of
public transport. He is known as the “Elevator Guy”.
“The lift becomes this interesting social space where etiquette( 礼 仪 ) is sort of odd”
Gray told the BBC. “They are socially very interesting but often very awkward places”.
We walk in and usually turn around to face the door. If someone else comes in, we may
have to move. And here, according to Gray, lift users unthinkingly go through a set pattern
of movements. He told the BBC what he had observed.
He explained that when you are the only one inside a lift, you can do whatever you
want--- it’s your own little box.
If there are two of you, you go into different corners, standing across from each other to
create distance.
When a third person enters, you will unconsciously form a triangle. And when there is
a fourth person it becomes a square, with someone in every corner. A fifth person is
probably going to have to stand in the middle.
Newcomers to the lift will need to size up the situation when the doors slide open and
then act decisively. Once in, for most people the rule is simple --- look down, or look at your
phone. Why are we so awkward in lifts?
“You don’t have enough space,” Professor Babette Renneberg, a clinical psychologis t at
the Free University of Berlin, told the BBC. “Usually when we meet other people we have
about an arm’s length of distance between us. And that’s not possible in most elevators.”
In such a small, enclosed space it becomes very important to act in a way that cannot be
und erstood as threatening or odd. “The easiest way to do this is to avoid eye contact,” she
said.
32. The main purpose of the article is to _____.
A. remind us to enjoy ourselves in the elevator
B. tell us some unwritten rules of elevator etiquette
C. sh are an interesting but awkward elevator ride
D. analyze what makes people feel awkward in an elevator
33. Which of the following describes how people probably stand when there are 5 people in
an elevator?
A. ●●●● B. ● ● C. ● ● D. ● ●
● ●●● ●● ● ● ●
(door) (door) (door) (door)
34. The underlined phrase “size up” in Paragraph 7 is closest in meaning to _____.
A. judge B. seize C. stand D. establish
35. According to the article, people feel awkward in lifts because of _____.
A. someone’s odd behaviors B. the lack of space
C. their unfamiliarity with one another D. their eye contact with one another

School doesn’t have to be a prison. Whether you find school difficult, boring, or just
stressful, you can learn to make school easier and bring a lot more fun. Here are some ways
that can help you:
●Try a team sport. Some schools offer team sports that allow you to make friends with
your fellow students. Soccer, track and field, basketball and football, can all make school
have a little more fun. 36 If you don’t want to play sports, consider attending the
games and cheering for your team with your friends.
● 37 One of the most stressful parts of school can be making sure you have everything
you’re supposed to have. Where’s your English homework? Where’s that math assignment?
Is your pencil sharp? The less you have to worry about these little things, the more you’ll be
able to focus and enjoy school. 38
●Take it easy on your teachers. Teachers are like students: some are great, some are less
than great. But teachers are in charge of the classroom. So even if you’re feeling frustrated
or bored in class, you should be nice to your teachers. 39
●Ask for help if you are having trouble with homework. 40 Make it easy. Ask for help
at school by joining an after-school study group, if your school has one. Ask your teacher if
you can stay 10-15 minutes after school to ask a few questions about your homework, if
you’re embarrassed to ask during class. It’s always better to ask.
A. Stay organized.
B. Manage your homework better.
C. So you can choose one of them to take up.
D. Try to find kids you can talk to and play with.
E. As a result, they will possibly be friendly back to you.
F. Be prepared for class and everything will be easier .
G. If you’re struggling in school, don’t try to take it all on by yourself.
