第二部分 阅读理解(共两节,满分 35 分)

阅读下列短文,从每题所给的四个选项(A、B、C 和 D)中选出最佳选项,并在答题卡
上将该项涂黑。
A
Almost everybody in America will spend a part of his or her life behind a shopping
cart. They will in a lifetime, push the chromeplated contraptions many miles. But
few will know — or even think to ask — who it was that invented them.
Sylvan N. Goldman invented the shopping cart in 1937. At that time he was in
the supermarket business. Every day he would see shoppers lugging groceries around
in baskets they had to carry.
One day Goldman suddenly had the idea of putting baskets on wheels. The wheeled
baskets would make shopping much easier for his customers, and would help to attract
more business.
On June 4, 1937, Goldman's first carts were ready for use in his market. He was
terribly excited on the morning of that day as customers began arriving. He couldn't
wait to see them using his invention.
But Goldman was disappointed. Most shoppers gave the carts a long look, but
hardly anybody would give them a try.
After a while, Goldman decided to ask customers why they weren't using his carts.
“Don't you think this arm is strong enough to carry a shopping basket?” one shopper
replied.
But Goldman wasn't beaten yet. He knew his carts would be a great success if
only he could persuade people to give them a try. So Goldman hired a group of people
to push carts around his market and pretend they were shopping! Seeing this, the
real customers gradually began copying the phony (假的) customers.
As Goldman had hoped, the carts were soon attracting larger and larger numbers
of customers to his market. But not only did more people come — those who came bought
more. With larger easiertohandle baskets, customers unconsciously bought a
greater number of items than before.
Today's shopping carts are five times larger than Goldman's original model.
Perhaps that's one reason why Americans today spend more than five times as much
money on food each year as they did before 1937 — the coming of the shopping cart.
21.What was the purpose of Goldman's invention?
A. It was to prove him to be a good inventor.
B.It was to reduce the burden of his employees' work.
C.It was to make shopping easier and attract more business.
D.It was to help the disabled make shopping easily in his market.
22.Goldman hired a group of people to push carts around his market in order to
________.
A.attract people to buy things in his market
B.encourage people to use his shopping carts
C.make his market different from the others
D.keep the groceries from being stolen
23.What can we infer from the last paragraph?
A.Goldman will become very famous because of his invention.
B.Goldman's invention will be regarded as the greatest one in the world.
C.Supermarket business has benefited a lot from Goldman's invention.
D.There will be nothing that can replace Goldman's invention.

As a child, visiting the zoo was more a punishment than a treat. I didn't find
the chimps' tea parties funny, nor the bird shows entertaining. Feeding time for
seals was less painful, but their performances still seemed like they belonged more
in a circus.
And I hated circuses, especially the animal acts — men teasing lions, girls
balancing on elephants and monkeys playing football. I knew that every trick a circus
animal did was unnatural, achieved through strict training and quite possibly
cruelty.
Happily, during my lifetime public attitudes and the law have changed. Circuses
using wild animals are now almost extinct, and zoos have definitely evolved.
When my children were young, I occasionally took them to our local zoo. The
elephants were in tiny cages and the gorillas looked bored as they sat peeling bananas
and staring at teasing visitors. Each cage had a sign which listed the animal's name
and where it came from. But, back then, there was little information included about
the environmental challenges they faced.
As a result, environmentalists and animal lovers often oppose zoos. “Animals
belong in the wild !” is a common and understandable complaint. But what do the
animals themselves prefer?
Generally speaking, zoo animals have a longer life. But — you may protest —
they are not free. What? Free to be hunted and killed, free to die of hunger or thirst?
Maybe sitting in a cage eating bananas isn't so bad.
Not that such conditions are acceptable in modern zoos, due to the work of BIAZA,
the British and Irish Association of Zoos and Aquariums. These days every zoo
requires BIAZA's approval to operate, and the association sets the standards,
observes conditions in zoos and develops animalresearch programmes, both in the
UK and abroad. BIAZA also organizes the animal exchanges between zoos all over the
world.
Consequently, today, most zoo animals are born and raised in zoos, live in large,
comfortable enclosures and are cared for by welltrained, knowledgeable and caring
zoo employees. Of course it's no substitute for living in the wild but unfortunately
this isn't always possible. Meanwhile, why not visit your local zoo and decide for
yourself?
24.The passage is mainly about ________.
A.how zoos have improved
B.whether a zoo should be closed down
C.a new environmental organization
D.the difference between zoos and circuses
25.From Paragraph 2, we can guess that the writer believes circus animals ________.
A.had much shorter lives than those in the wild
B.were not treated well by their trainers
C.should have been placed in zoos
D.were not as intelligent as those in zoos
26.Which of the following roles are performed by BIAZA?
A.Organizing animal study projects and training zoo workers.
B.Checking zoo conditions and arranging animal exchanges.
C.Designing zoos and approving zoo operations.
D.Caring for ill animals and setting zoo standards.
27.Which of the following statements about zoos would the writer agree with?
A.Zoo animals should be freed into the wild.
B.Zoos are more popular now than in the past.
C.Zoo animals are more restricted than in the past.
D.Zoos now provide caring living conditions for animals.

Social networking sites have changed the way that people interact and connect
on a daily basis. One of the major concerns that have caught the attention of many,
is the influence that social media may be having on social anxiety disorders.
If removed from their phone for a few hours or a few days, the average person
would likely feel anxious about not being “connected.” Most people have probably
experienced an occasion in which they posted a creative photo, and waited to see
how many “likes” or “retweets” they received. If this number is lower than
expected, the ego (自我) is going to take a hit. There’s also constant checking
of the number of “followers” and “friends” that you have, and these numbers can
have a direct influence on feelings of acceptance and popularity.
Anxiety can arise from feeling at a loss when faced with too much going on at
one time. Multitasking can very quickly lead to increased levels of anxiety. Most
people can likely relate to feeling the constant need to check their phone while
driving, during meals or at work. This desire is actually leading to increased levels
of anxiety. The choice to be constantly connected leads to the feeling of having
to always make yourself available.
Social anxiety is much different from the anxiety one feels from being offline.
It’s a more serious type of anxiety resulting from the fear of being judged by others
while in a social interaction. Cases can range from mild -- and are often the cause
of a lot of drinking with others -- to severe, in which case a person may avoid parties
and get-togethers altogether.
The degree to which social media and technology are changing our lives and
introducing new forms of anxiety is anything but deniable. The real question is to
what extent they are introducing new disorders or increasing existing ones like
social anxiety. It’s certainly a topic worth studying more to determine who is being
helped, who is being harmed and how social anxiety can be dealt with.
28. What’s the major focus of the text?
A. Human desire for social interaction.
B. The influence of social media on anxiety.
C. Anxiety resulting from interpersonal relationships.
D. The popularity of social media in people’s daily life.
29. According to the author, which of the following can lead to increased levels
of anxiety?
A. Not being available for get-togethers.
B. Chatting on the phone with a friend.
C. Dying to use the phone while driving.
D. Eating meals alone.
30. What does the underlined word “they” refer to?
A. Life changes. B. Anxiety degrees.
C. New forms of anxiety. D. Social media and technology.

Many scientists believe our love of sugar may actually be an addiction. When

to after-dinner desserts, our foods are increasingly filled with it.

第二节 读后续写(满分 25 分)
阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。
After 21 years of marriage, my wife wanted me to take another woman out to
dinner and a movie. It’s hard to imagine that the other woman was my mother,
who has been a widow for 19 years, but I am too busy to visit her often. That night
I called to invite her to go out for dinner and a movie.
“What’s wrong? Are you well?” she asked. My mother is the type of woman who
suspect that a late night call or a surprise invitation is a sign of bad news.
“I thought that it would be pleasant to spend some time with you,” I
responded. “Just the two of us.”
That Friday after work, as I drove over to pick her up, I was a bit nervous.
When I arrived at her house, I noticed that she, too, seemed to be nervous about
our date. She waited in the door with her coat on. She had curled her hair and was
wearing the dress that she had worn to celebrate her last wedding anniversary. She
smiled from a face that was as beautiful as an angel’s.
“I told my friends that I was going to go out with my son, and they were
impressed,” she said, as she got into the car. “They can’t wait to hear about
our meeting.”
We went to a restaurant that, although not elegant, was very nice and cozy.
My mother took my arm as if she were the First Lady. After we sat down, I had to read
the menu. Her eyes could only read large print. Halfway through the entries, I lifted
my eyes and saw Mom sitting there staring at me with a smile on her lips.
“It was I who used to have to read the menu when you were small,” she said.
“Then it’s time you relax and let me return the favor,” I responded.
During the dinner, we had an agreeable conversation --nothing extraordinary
but catching up on recent events of each other’s life. We talked so much that we
missed the movie. As we arrived at her house later, she said, “I'll go out with
you again, but only if you let me invite you.” I agreed.
