The route (路线) into Forest Hill passes the Horniman Museum with its unusual collection of natural history and musical instruments; free admission.‎ Ealing Broadway Walk Length: 11 miles This is a walking tour of green spaces and interesting places to visit in West London. Boston Manor tube station and Brentford main line station are close to the route.‎ Blackheath to Canary Wharf Walk Length: 7.5 miles ‎ The main attraction of this walk is the World Heritage Site at its centre, including Greenwich Park, the Old Royal Naval College and Royal Museums Greenwich (the National Maritime Museum, the Queen’s House, Royal Observatory and Cutty Sark included). However, scientists ‎ are saying that we need to give ourselves a break—otherwise we put ourselves at risk of developing hundreds of health problems. With all this free time, why not put it to good use and do something without technology?‎ To start with, you could learn a new skill. There are hundreds of possibilities: crafts (工艺), cooking, learning a musical instrument or a new sport. Maybe you’ve always wanted to learn to cook for your family, but haven’t had time? Perhaps you feel like learning how to knit (编织), so you can have a new sweater for the autumn? You could use your free time to learn something new—and perhaps it will lead to an exciting chance in the future.‎ If you just want to relax, why not go to a beach? Take along your favorite book and relax on the sand, or go for a walk along the coastline. If you don’t live near a beach, you could go to your local park. Why not take along a picnic, or try and discover some of the local wildlife?‎ Little things, like challenging yourself to complete a crossword or a Sudoku, are a great place to start. You could even follow the latest fashion: adult coloring books! Coloring is amazing, and it can be a nice way to escape from the pressure of modern life!‎ Whatever you choose to do with your summer, try something new! Not knowing where to get the money, he and a friend decided to host a musical concert to raise money for their education.‎ They went to the great pianist Paderewski. His manager demanded $2,000 for the piano recital (独奏会). A deal was made and the boys began to work to make the concert a success. ‎ The big day arrived. But unfortunately, they hadn’t managed to sell enough tickets. The total collection was only $1,600. Disappointed, they went to Paderewski and gave him the entire $1,600, and promised to pay him the rest $400 back as soon as possible. “No,” said Paderewski. “Keep the money you need for your fees. And just give me whatever is left.” The boys were surprised, and very thankful.‎ Paderewski later became the Prime Minister of Poland, and he was a great leader. When the World War broke out, more than 1.5 million people went hungry, but there was no food to feed them. Paderewski turned to the US Food and Relief Administration for help.‎ The head there was a man called Herbert Hoover—who later became the US President. Hoover agreed to help and quickly shipped tons of food to Poland.‎ Paderewski decided to go across to thank Hoover himself. When Paderewski began to thank Hoover for his kindness, Hoover quickly stopped him and said, “You shouldn’t be thanking me, Mr. Prime Minister. You may not remember this, but several years ago, you helped two young students go through college. I was one of them.”‎ ‎28.Why did the two students decide to raise money?‎ A. To pay for their education. B. To buy the concert tickets.‎ C. To help people in Poland. D. To hold a musical concert.‎ ‎29.What did the two students think of the pianist?‎ A. Greedy. B. Humorous. C. Helpful. D. Shy. ‎ ‎30.What can we learn about Herbert Hoover?‎ ‎ A. He was one of Paderewski’s students. ‎ B. He didn’t finish his college education.‎ C. He was very rich when he was young. ‎ D. He was one of the American presidents.‎ ‎31.What can we learn from the text?‎ A. Great minds think alike. ‎ B. Kindness brings its own rewards.‎ C. Honesty is the best policy. ‎ D. Where there’s a will, there’s a way.‎ D ‎“It’s raining cats and dogs!” Although this phrase is not very common in England any more, it clearly shows how we don’t always say what we mean. One thing that is often frustrating (灰心的) for language learners is that they understand every word in a sentence and yet the meaning remains unclear—like this sentence that actually means “it’s raining very heavily!” However, it’s not just idioms that cause difficulties for people learning English.‎ The British are often considered to be polite but this can be very confusing for non-native speakers. We often don’t say what we are thinking—in fact we often say the opposite! Here’s an example that will hopefully explain what I mean: “You should come round for tea!”‎ British people are less open than people from other cultures, so we aren’t as quick to invite people into our homes. This phrase is one of those that we say but often don’t really mean, so when no further details are given, you can probably assume (认为) it was made in the name of politeness! But how does this compare to other countries?‎ When I lived in India, lots of people would invite me into their homes but I always assumed that they were just being polite. Of course, I was wrong. The invitations were ‎ almost always genuine, and people expected me to visit them. I was always surprised by how welcoming people were. In fact, I think I spent more time at other people’s houses than my own!‎ In England, we often think it’s polite to offer or suggest something even if we don’t actually want to do it, while in other cultures people are more direct. Perhaps if English people just say what they were thinking, things would be a lot easier—especially for non-native speakers!‎ ‎32.The example “It’s raining cats and dogs!” is mentioned to show that ______.‎ ‎ A. it is time for people protect these pet animals ‎ ‎ B. the weather condition in England is rather awful ‎ ‎ C. what British people say is different from what they think ‎ ‎ D. it is difficult for non-native learner to understand idioms ‎33.What do people from other cultures think of British people’s politeness?‎ ‎ A. Direct and honest. B. Too traditional to accept.‎ ‎ C. Serious and formal. D. Difficult to understand.‎ ‎34.Which of the following best explains “genuine” underlined in Paragraph 4?‎ A. Personal. B. Real. C. Informal. D. Special.‎ ‎35.What is the main purpose of the text?‎ ‎ A. To encourage people to show politeness.‎ ‎ B. To teach people how to avoid misunderstandings.‎ ‎ C. To discuss how to learn English idioms effectively.‎ ‎ D. To advise people to understand politeness culturally.‎ 第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)‎ Forgiveness Forgiveness is a quality that is difficult to possess. When someone has deeply hurt you, it can be extremely difficult to let go of your hate. However, forgiveness is possible, and it can be surprisingly beneficial to your physical and mental health. People who forgive show less sadness, anger and stress and more hopefulness, according to a recent research.‎ ‎ 36 Try the following steps:‎ Calm yourself. 37 You can take a couple of breaths and think of something that gives you pleasure: a beautiful scene in nature, or someone you love.‎ Don’t wait for an apology. Many times the person who hurt you does not intend to apologize. They may have wanted to hurt you or they just don’t see things the same way.‎ ‎ 38 Keep in mind that forgiveness does not necessarily mean becoming friends again with the person who upset you.‎ Take the control away from your offender(冒犯者). Rethinking about your hurt gives power to the person who caused you pain. Instead of focusing on your wounded feelings, learn to look for the love, beauty and kindness around you.‎ ‎ 39 If you understand your offender, you may realize that he or she was acting out of unawareness, fear, and even love. You may want to write a letter to yourself from your offender’s point of view.‎ Don’t forget to forgive yourself. 40 But it can rob you of your self-confidence if you don’t do it. ‎ A. Why should you forgive?‎ B. How should you start to forgive?‎ C. To make your anger die away, try a simple stressmanagement technique.‎ D. Recognize the benefits of forgiveness.‎ E. If you wait for people to apologize, you could be waiting an awfully long time.‎ F. For some people, forgiving themselves is the biggest challenge.‎ G.
