Friends, neighbors and her doctor joined Morano in her small apartment home in the northern Italian mountain town of Verbania. She blew out three candles on her birthday cake. Each candle represented a number in her age. “I hope I don’t have to cut it,” Morano joked.‎ ‎“She dressed up and she was very proud,” said her long-time doctor, Carlo Bava. “She posed for a photographer, and even asked if her hair looked good.” “I am happy to turn 117,” Morano told those attending her party. She received a greeting from Italy’s president, Sergio Mattarella. He wished her peace and continued good health. She is thought to be the last living person born in the 1800s. She outlived all her brothers and sisters, including one who died at age 102.‎ Her doctor noted that when Morano was young, people used to say she was weak and often sick. “Yes, yes,” she said. The world’s oldest person told the Reuters (路透社) news agency that while she is lucky to have lived so long, parts of her life were “not so nice.” She worked in a factory until she retired at age 65. Morano once told a reporter that the first man she planned to marry was killed in World War One. Then, at age 26, she was forced to marry a man she did not love. She said the man threatened to kill her if he did not marry her. She had a son, but the baby died after just six months. She said the marriage was not happy and her husband was abusive. She kicked him out in 1938 and has lived alone since then.‎ Emma Morano says one of her secrets to living long is eating at least two uncooked eggs every day. Which of the following can be the best title of the passage?‎ ‎ A. Secrets to the Longest Life B. Celebration of the Oldest Living Person ‎ ‎ C. World’s Oldest Person Turns 117 D. Backgrounds of the Oldest Living Person ‎ C ‎ Diana Jacobs thought her family had a workable plan to pay for college for her 21-year-old twin sons: a combination of savings, income, scholarships, and a modest amount of borrowing. Then her husband lost his job, and the plan fell apart.‎ ‎“I have two kids in college, and I want to say ‘come home,’ but at the same time I want to provide them with a good education,” says Jacobs.‎ The Jacobs family did work out a solution: They asked and received more aid from the schools, and each son increased his borrowing to the maximum amount through the federal loan (贷款) program. They will each graduate with $20,000 of debt, but at least they will be able to finish school.‎ With unemployment rising, financial aid administrators expect to hear more families like the Jacobs. More students are applying for aid, and more families expect to need student loans. College administrators are concerned that they will not have enough aid money to go around.‎ At the same time, tuition(学费)continues to rise. A report from the National Center for Public Policy and Higher Education found that college tuition and fees increased 439% from 1982 to 2007, while average family income rose just 147%. Student borrowing has more than doubled in the last decade,‎ ‎“If we go on this way for another 25 years, we won’t have an affordable system of higher education,” says Patrick M. Callan, president of the center. “The middle class families have been financing it through debt. They will send kids to college whatever it takes, even if that means a huge amount of debt.”‎ Financial aid administrators have been having a hard time as many companies decide that student loans are not profitable enough and have stopped making them. The good news, however, is that federal loans account for about three quarters of student borrowing, and the government says that money will flow uninterrupted.‎ ‎8. How did the Jacobs manage to solve their problem?‎ ‎    A. They asked their kids to come home.‎ ‎    B. They borrowed $20,000 from the school.‎ ‎    C. They got help from the school and the federal government.‎ ‎    D. They encouraged their twin sons to do part-time jobs.‎ ‎9. Financial aid administrators believe that _______.‎ ‎    A. America’s unemployment will fall ‎ ‎    B. college tuition fees will double soon ‎ ‎    C. the government will receive more letters of complaint ‎    D. more families will face the same problem as the Jacobs family ‎10. What can we learn about the middle class families from the text?‎ ‎ A. They will try their best to send kids to college.‎ ‎ B. Their income remained steady in the last decade.‎ ‎ C. They blamed the government for the tuition increase.‎ ‎ D. Their debts will be paid off within 25 years.‎ ‎11. According to the last paragraph, the government will __________ .‎ ‎ A. go on providing financial support for college students ‎ ‎ B. stop the companies from making student loans ‎ ‎ C. dismiss some financial aid administrators ‎ D. provide most students with scholarships D When we say older people shrink, we don't mean they become tiny enough to fit in your pocket! We just mean that it's common for older people to become a little shorter over time. This kind of shrinking can't be reversed, although people can slow or stop this process. But why does shrinking happen at all?‎ Because of gravity (the force that keeps your feet on the ground) , cushions between the bones in the spine (脊骨), get compressed (压缩), which makes a person lose a little height and become shorter.‎ Another reason why some older people shrink is because of osteoporosis (骨质疏松). Osteoporosis occurs when bone is broken down and not enough new bone material is made. Over time, bone is said to be lost because it's not being replaced. Bones become smaller and weaker and can easily break if someone with osteoporosis is injured.‎ Older people—especially women, who generally have smaller and lighter bones to begin with—are more likely to develop osteoporosis. As years go by, a person with osteoporosis can get small breaks in bones that are called compression fractures(受压骨折). These breaks cause collapse of the spine and over time the person with osteoporosis can become hunched over (驼背).‎ Did you know that every day you shrink a little, too? You aren't as tall at the end of the day as you are at the beginning. That's because as the day goes on, water in the disks of the spine gets compressed due to gravity, making you just a tiny bit shorter. Don't worry, though. Once you get a good night's rest, your body recovers, and the next morning, you're standing tall again!‎ Smoking and drinking alcohol can make this problem worse. Want to do something right now to build strong bones? I believe what I will say will help you.‎ ‎12.Which of the following statements is true?‎ ‎ A. For shrinking, people can do nothing about it. ‎ ‎ B. Women have smaller and lighter bones than men.‎ ‎ C. We aren't as tall at the end of the day as we are at the beginning. ‎ ‎ D. If someone is injured, he will become shorter.‎ ‎13.What should we do if we don't want to shrink faster?‎ ‎ A. We should try to reduce gravity.  ‎ ‎ B. We should sleep as long as possible. ‎ ‎ C. We should be careful not to be hurt by others.‎ ‎ D. We should keep away from smoking and drinking alcohol.‎ ‎14.About osteoporosis, we know that _______. ‎ ‎ A. gravity is one of the causes of osteoporosis ‎ B. women are more likely to develop osteoporosis ‎ C. if we develop osteoporosis, we are more likely to be shorter ‎ ‎ D. once our bone is broken down, osteoporosis will occur ‎15.What will the author talk about in the paragraph to be followed?‎ ‎ A. Tell us how to grow taller.             B. Tell us what to do to have strong bones.‎ ‎ C. Tell us how to become healthier.  D. Tell us how to avoid being shrinking. ‎ 第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)‎ 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。 ‎ If something that you’re doing doesn’t challenge you, then it doesn’t change you.
