She said a polite “no”. That didn’t stop me. I Googled the measurements for a keyboard, drew the keys on a piece of paper and stuck it on my desk. I would click notes on an online keyboard and “play” them back on my paper one – keeping the sound they made on the computer in my head. I spent six months playing without touching a real piano. Once my mom saw that I was serious, she borrowed money and bought me 10 lessons. I still remember the first one. I was struck by how real the sound of the piano was. I sat my grade one after eight lessons. Once I started secondary school, we couldn’t afford lessons again. I passed grade three, then grade five, practicing only on my piece of paper. One evening, when I was about 13, my mom said she had a surprise for me; it was an electronic keyboard, bought with more borrowed money. It was the first time I’d played for her. She was in shock. My school didn’t offer music A-level. I found the Purcell School for young musicians. The tryouts (选拔) were difficult. Some of the questions involved an estimation (评价) of the composer (作曲家) or when it was written. I felt overwhelmed. To my amazement I was offered a place.  At Purcell, I spent two years working as hard as I could. I performed to raise money and saved enough to buy my first piano. When I left Purcell, I was awarded the senior piano prize and senior academic music prize. I am now at the Guildhall School in London. I feel proud: it’s been 10 years since I drew my paper piano, and I’m at one of the world’s leading music schools. The irony is that I continue to do a lot of my practice away from the piano: what we call mental practice. The paper piano helped spark my curiosity about how music works, the building blocks that form the pieces. ‎ ‎24. Why did the author’s mom buy him lessons at last?  A. She suddenly made a fortune.  B. She had no doubt of his talent for piano.   C. She realized he meant what he said. D. She was shocked by his first performance.‎ ‎25. Which of the following can best describe the author?  A. Honest.        B. Determined. C. Humorous.        D. Modest.‎ ‎26. The word “irony” in the last paragraph shows that the author was _______. A. surprised        B. proud C. satisfied        D. curious ‎27. What’s the author’s main purpose of writing this article?  A. To introduce the method of mental practice.  B. To share how he convinced his mom to buy a piano. C. To encourage people to stick to their dreams. D. To describe how costly it is to learn an instrument.‎ C Although it has been indicated in recent years that plants are capable of seeing, hearing and smelling, they are still usually thought of as silent. But now, for the first time, Itzhak Khait and his ‎ colleagues at Tel Aviv University in Israel found that tomato and tobacco plants made ultrasonic(超声的)sounds at frequencies humans can't hear when stressed by a lack of water or when their stem is cut.‎ Microphones placed 10 centimeters from the plants picked up sounds in the ultrasonic range of 20 to 100 kilohertz. Human hearing usually ranges from 20 hertz to 20 kilohertz. " These findings can alter the way we think about the plant kingdom , " they wrote in their study, which has not yet been published.‎ On average, drought - stressed tomato plants made 35 sounds an hour, while tobacco plants made 11. When plant stems were cut, tomato plants made an average of 25 sounds in the following hour, and tobacco plants 15. Unstressed plants produced fewer than one sound per hour. It is even possible to distinguish between the sounds to know what the stress is. The researchers trained a machine — learning model to separate the plants, sounds from those of the wind, rain and other noises of the greenhouse, correctly identifying in most cases whether the stress was caused by dryness or a cut, based on the sound's intensity and frequency. Water- hungry tobacco appeared to make louder sounds than cut tobacco, for example. Although Khait and his colleagues only looked at tomato and tobacco plants, they believe other plants may make sounds when stressed.‎ Enabling farmers to listen for water - stressed plants could " open a new direction in the field of precision(精准) agriculture", the researchers suggest. They add that such an ability will be increasingly important as climate change exposes more areas to drought.‎ Khait's study also suggests that insects and some mammals can hear and respond to from as far as 5 metres away. A moth may decide against laying eggs on a plant that sounds water - stressed. Edward Farmer at the University of Lausanne, Switzerland thinks the idea that moths might be listening to plants is “a little too speculative”. After all, there are already plenty of explanations for why insects avoid some plants and not others.‎ ‎28.What were tomato and tobacco plants' reactions to different stresses?‎ A.They reacted to different types of stress with the same sound.‎ B.Cut tomato plants produced more sounds per hour than water —hungry ones .‎ C.Cut tobacco plants seemed to make lower sounds than drought - stressed ones.‎ D.Tobacco plants might make louder sounds than tomato plants when short of water.‎ ‎29.What's the main idea of Paragraph 4?‎ A.The potential applications of the research.‎ B.Challenges facing farmers in the future.‎ C.Farmers' contributions to the research.‎ D.The future development of agriculture.‎ ‎30.What does the underlined word "speculative" in the last paragraph probably mean?‎ A.Practical B.Surprising. C.Unsupported. D.Complicated.‎ ‎31.What may be the best title for the text?‎ A.Silent scream B.Mysteries of nature C.Inner voices D.A yet - to-be - published study D Despite the negative international headlines that have hit Huawei over the past few months, its consumer business continues to thrive. The Chinese technology giant replaced Apple as the secondlargest smart-phone player by global market share last year. It’s firmly the biggest vendor(销售商) in China.‎ Chinese consumers say they’ve been attracted to Huawei’s newest features, the price points and the fact that it’s a domestic brand.“Using Huawei’s mobile phones is supporting domestic brands. We hope our brands can go international,” Vikey, a Guangzhoubased Huawei user, told CNBC. She added that Huawei phones are “costeffective” and have good features while iPhones are “more of a trend”. One of the key features that Huawei introduced was a triplelens camera on its P20 Pro, which was launched last year.‎ For the next 12 months, the iPhone lacks one of the most appealing features of current winners in the Chinese smart-phone market, the triplelens camera. The Huawei P20 Pro led the march.‎ Retailers(零售商) are slashing iPhone prices across China as consumers say the phones aren’t worth the cost. Apple’s latest iPhone models are facing huge discounts in China as retailers try to sell the struggling devices. That comes as the topoftheline Apple smart-phones have posted poor China sales on what experts say are toohigh prices for the world’s largest smart-phone market and a lack of innovative features compared to local competitors like Huawei. The technology giant itself acknowledged earlier this month that unexpectedly low sales in the Chinese market would likely lead to worsethananticipated first quarter profits.‎ One of the most recent iPhone cost cuts in the country came from Suning, a large Chinese retailer, which changed the price of the 128GB version of the iPhone XR from 6,999 yuan to 5,799 yuan—a 1,200 yuan discount.‎ Other retailers in China are also putting their iPhones on sale. Sunion, an Apple reseller, was advertising 700 yuan off for both the 128GB and 256GB versions of the iPhone XR. Ecommerce site Pinduoduo, which allows thirdparties to sell products, also had hefty(很大的)discounts across all of the latest iPhone models.‎ ‎32.What does the underlined word “thrive” probably mean in the first paragraph?‎ A.Reduce. B.Remain. C.Threaten. D.Increase.‎ ‎33.Which of the following is one of the Huawei’s characters?‎ A.More of a trend. B.Costeffective.‎ C.Toohigh prices. D.A lack of innovative features.‎ ‎34.Which of the following is a medium?‎ A.Suning. B.Sunion. C.CNBC. D.Pinduoduo.‎ ‎35.What can we infer from the text?‎ A.Updating of technology counts. B.Advertising of the products matters.‎ C.The sale strategy is invisible. D.The iPhone still leads the trend in China.‎ 第二节 (共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)‎ 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。 ‎ What Teenagers Can Do To Earn More Respect As teenagers continue to grow and develop into young adults, the transition(过渡) into adulthood has begun. With so many physical and emotional changes going on, certain manners are often forgotten and other adult traits (特征) are not yet accepted as a way of life.   36   By doing the following things, you will earn more respect.‎ Contribute to the household At the very least, clean up after yourself. As a teenager, you are old enough to clean up after yourself. When you make a mess, clean it up. This includes, but is not limited to, your dishes and your room. All chores (零星工作) that you do help to reduce the load of the person who did them before. Now that you’re old enough and capable, why shouldn’t you contribute to the household?   37  ‎ Be responsible ‎       38   Whether they are basic things, like brushing your teeth or doing your homework , or more involved chores that contribute to the household, simply fulfill your responsibilities on time. When adults know that they can rely on you, their trust and respect for you will increase.‎ ‎  39    ‎ Instead of taking the easy approach and asking for help, make an effort to solve your problems on your own first. The “easy way” is only easy for you, but it is an extra task for the person from whom you are seeking help.  40   Depending on the problem, 15 minutes of effort is usually a good guideline. When you become a good problem solver, you increase your value to the community.‎ ‎ A. Everyone has certain responsibilities.‎ ‎ B. It will make your life more pleasant.‎ ‎ C. The people doing the chores before will greatly appreciate the help.‎ ‎ D. By being aware of these manners and traits, you can manage them sooner.‎ ‎ E. Solve more of your own problem without asking for help ‎ F. Seek help only after you have made an honest effort to solve your own problems.‎ G. When speaking to a group, speak loud enough.‎ 第二部分 语言知识运用(共两节,满分45分)‎ 第一节 完形填空(共20小题;每小题1.5分,满分30分)‎ 阅读下面短文,从短文后各题所给的A、B、C和D四个选项中,选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。‎ A couple of weeks ago, my grandfather was explaining his favorite expression, “Nothing is ever easy.” The following day, as I tried to complete my clay’s work, I happened to 41 a bumblebee (大黄蜂) on the skylight (天窗). The skylight was particularly high up, but I thought 42 the bee would take no more than five minutes. An hour later, the bee still remained. All that had 43 was that the living room was a mess and that I was dizzy from 44 into the sunlight. I did not expect to waste an hour on an insect so 45 but by doing so, I understood what my grandfather meant.‎ It is not only time that we tend to underestimate…we don’t account for unexpected costs. We often imagine what can work in our 46 but we seldom think of all the 47 things that could affect us. However, it is important to remember that your day or week or year might not go as 48 and that is completely normal. It is 49 acceptable to feel challenged — even at a 50 that you thought was simple — because that is part of life.‎ If you can 51 that nothing will ever be easy, then 52 might seem slightly more manageable. In middle school, I thought high school might be easier because I could choose the classes I wanted to 53 . In high school, I thought 54 might be easier because I could have a schedule best suited for myself. Yet each time, I was both wrong and disappointed. After accepting that school wouldn’t (and shouldn’t) be 55 , I found myself with a more positive attitude and 56 results.‎ Of course, there should be 57 made to account for expenses or time. Doing so can only help you 58 your goals in a better way. However, there is no need to beat ourselves up (过分自责) when something stands in our 59 . Maybe we cannot see a 60 coming our way, but we can always give ourselves the extra time to catch it.‎ ‎41.A.arrest B.notice C.fly D.attract ‎42.A.describing B.exploring C.removing D.warning ‎43.A.changed B.failed C.cleared D.ended ‎44.A.cleaning up B.turning up C.looking up D.making up ‎45.A.awful B.worrying C.tiny D.big ‎46.A.favor B.dream C.trip D.reason ‎47.A successful B.helpful C.positive D.negative ‎48.A.observed B.promised C.unexpected D.planned ‎49.A.seriously B.perfectly C.obviously D.partly ‎50.A.task B.result C.fact D.belief ‎51.A.find B.know C.refuse D.accept ‎52.A.story B.relief C.life D.chance ‎53.A.take B.count C.bring D.keep ‎54.A.course B.college C.grade D.role ‎55.A.difficult B.easy C.complicated D.annoying ‎56.A.improved B.fallen C.recorded D.organized ‎57.A.agreements B.decisions C.experiments D.preparations ‎58.A.acknowledge B.accomplish C.predict D.remember ‎59.A.age B.face C.path D.view ‎60.A.friend B.helper C.bird D.bee 第二节(共 10 小题;每小题 1.5 分,满分 15 分)‎ 阅读下面材料,在空白处填入适当的内容(1 个单词)或括号内单词的正确形式。‎ After the novel coronavirus epidemic(新冠疫情) broke ___61___, China sincerely cooperated with the international community, and accepted the assistance ___62____ (offer) by various governments, international organizations, social groups and friendly people from other countries. ‎ From ___63___very beginning, China actively cooperated with the World Health Organization, ____64___ (inform) it of the epidemic situation and the measures it was taking, and welcomed the inspection and ____65____ (guide) of WHO experts.‎ In particular, China offered assistance to more than 150 countries and four international organizations in different ways, for which it ____66____ ( earn) high praise from the WHO already, other global organizations and the international community. Leaning that you are eager to know my opinions about my life in high school, I’m writing to share them with you in details as follows.‎ Regarded as the best time in a person’s life, you don’t have a second chance to experience life in high school. Challenging as it is, you are sure to gain lots of help from those who love you. So I would like to show my appreciation to those standing by me all the way, teachers, parents and friends included. Without their help and advice, my life would be fairly different. Secondly, you might as well build genuine friendship by treating friends sincerely and saying sorry to classmates whom you hurt or misunderstood. Do remember communication and smiles act as bridges to friendship. Above all, time in high school is so limited that you need to make full use of it. It would be a good idea to set a goal in senior 1 and then made up your mind to make every effort to study for it. Just as a saying goes, “ time and tide wait for no men”.‎ ‎ Are you thirsty to visit China after my graduation.? I’m looking forward to your reply.‎ ‎ Yours,‎ ‎ Li Hua
