Someday, the results could increase the amount of food produced around the world.‎ By changing a plant's genes, the scientists were able to increase leaf growth on plants by 14-20 percent. Specifically, scientists changed the plant's protective(保护的)system. “Normally, this system is activated when a plant gets too much sunlight,”said scientist Krishna Niyogi,co-author of the study. “When the plant senses the light,it gets rid of extra energy and creates more leaves. When the plant is in the shade, the protective system is turned off. But the process is slow.”‎ Stephen Long is the lead author of the study. He compared a plant's protective system to light-adjusting glasses.“When a person wears the glasses outside during the day,the lenses(镜片)darken and lighten depending on how sunny it is. Plants do the same thing,”he said.“But in plants the adjustment can take anywhere from 10 minutes to an hour. This makes it hard for plants to get the right amount of sunlight needed to create food.”‎ The new study sped up the process. By changing the plant's genes,it's more quickly than normal to turn on and turn off the protective system. As a result, leaf growth on the plants scientists used in the study increased. Leaf growth on two plants increased by 20 percent, while leaf growth on a third plant increased by 14percent. Scientists conducted the study on tobacco plants. But they thought the genetic modification would produce the same results in corn or rice.‎ ‎21.What does the plant's protective system need to keep activated?‎ A.Mild shade. B.Leaf growth.‎ C.Genetic changes. D.Enough sunlight.‎ ‎22.What does the underlined word“modification”in Paragraph 4mean?‎ A.Development. B.Decoration.‎ C.Change. D.Copying.‎ ‎23.What can we infer from this text?‎ A.Changing how a plant uses sunlight could mean more food in the future.‎ B.When the plant is in the shade, its protective system is turned off slowly.‎ C.Too much sunlight will damage plants' protective system.‎ D.It is hard for plants to create food without enough sunlight.‎ B Do you have trouble trying to create the next big idea? Sometimes the answer isn’t to just force an idea out of your mind. Instead, you might want to try sitting back, relaxing and letting your mind wander. Yes, you heard that correctly. If you are in need of a new idea, try daydreaming.‎ Researchers from the university of California, Santa Barbara, found an association between daydreaming and creative problem-solving. Their study includes having participants first do an “unusual-use task”. They had to try to come up with as many different ways to use an object as they could.‎ Then, the participants chose to do one of the following four things before doing the “unusual-use task” again: complete a difficult task; complete an easy task; take a 12-minute break; or skip the 12-minute break and move right on to the task exercise again.‎ Surprisingly, the group that performed best was the one that completed the easy task. Many participants reported that they were daydreaming while performing the easy task. So the researchers believed that this daydreaming might have helped unlock their creativity.‎ But how could daydreaming help the brain come up with creative ways? The answer is something known as “unconscious thought”. Even when you are not actively working to solve a problem, it is still in the back of your mind. Your brain is still thinking about the problem, but in a much more subtle (不易察觉的) way.‎ When you daydream, your mind is allowed to think in ways it normally would not. Because it is free of control,‎ ‎ it can create completely new and out-of-the-box ideas.‎ Great ideas never come easily, but that does not mean you always have to work hard to get them. Feel free to do what you want and let your mind wander.‎ ‎24.The “unusual-use task” in Paragraph 2 means that participants ______.‎ A.complete an easy task ‎ B.complete a very difficult task C.take a 12-minute break ‎ D.think of various ways to use an object ‎25.Why did the participants who completed the easy task perform best?‎ A.They were not actively working to solve the easy task.‎ B.They daydreamed and it helped them be more creative.‎ C.They were daydreaming while performing the difficult task.‎ D.They skipped the 12-minute break to complete the task again.‎ ‎26.What does the underlined phrase “unconscious thought” in Paragraph 5 mean?‎ A.Your brain wander in a subtle way within your control.‎ B.Your brain knows clearly what you’re thinking and doing.‎ C.Your brain is thinking about a problem outside of your awareness.‎ D.Your brain refuses to receive any information from the outside world.‎ ‎27.The passage mainly wants to tell us that ______.‎ A.brainstorming is important to creative ideas.‎ B.daydreaming is a way to improve creativity.‎ C.problem-solving skills are important in our lives.‎ D.the more we exercise brains, the more ideas we’ll get.‎ C While Chongqing is most famous for its hot pot, chuanchuan, and noodles, there is one more indispensable, delicious food offered to people in Chongqing: the fish.‎ Huguo Hot-Potted Corydoras Perhaps Chongqing’s best-loved fish restaurant, Huguo Hot-Potted Corydoras has been going for decades and is a can’t-miss place for most visitors because of its special flavor. When the pot is served, you will be surprised by its look and stunned by its fragrance . But after a long struggle, I found a hobby that changed my life.‎ My depression really kicked in after my parents moved to the UK when I was about 11 years old. Having to get used to life in a foreign country was very difficult. The friends I knew were gone, and the changes in my environment led to my depression. I had problems in many parts of my life, which made it feel impossible for me to carry on.‎ At that time, I didn’t understand that depression was an illness. I remember a particular day when I couldn’t find enough strength to get myself home from playing in the park—it felt like I was carrying the world on my shoulders.‎ Other times, I even thought about killing myself —I just felt so trapped. I never really reached out for help either, as I felt that there wasn’t anyone who could have helped with my situation.‎ What turned my life around, however, was discovering street dancing. I was introduced to it by a friend, and I started taking classes at a studio in London. After a few weeks, I began to go out and meet a lot of other dancers to practice and train with them on a regular basis. It gave me a purpose, and eventually the happiness I gained from it helped me manage my depression. The dancing helped me get my life back, focus on my studies, and get through university.‎ My advice to anyone who might be going through something like I was is to reach out for help. The thing about life is that it changes, and you never know what might come your way. If someone had said to me during those dark moments that I would have gone on to achieve the things I have, I wouldn’t have ever believed it.‎ Just take each day as it comes, and remember that there’s always someone, or something, out there to help you.‎ ‎32.How did the author deal with his depression at first?‎ A.He turned to his old friends for help.‎ B.He talked about it with his parents.‎ C.He put up with it by himself.‎ D.He read many articles about it.‎ ‎33.How did street dancing benefit the author?‎ A.It helped him find a good job.‎ B.It taught him how to control his emotions perfectly.‎ C.It let him find many true friends.‎ D.It cheered him up and made him feel positive.‎ ‎34.What does the author suggest people do when they feel down?‎ A.Always be confident in themselves.‎ B.Find someone or something to rescue them.‎ C.Wait for help to come patiently.‎ D.Accept everything that life sends their way.‎ ‎35.How might the author feel about his future?‎ A.Hopeful.
