He was, as he puts it, “not very bright” and couldn’t win the attention of his very wealthy parents, who preferred his “clever” older brother. At age 8, ‎ Horowitz was sent away to an abusive boarding school in his native England, even though he screamed and begged his parents year after year not to send him. “The thought was, ‘It’ll be good for him’ ,” Horowitz recalls (回忆).‎ It was not. Horowitz did badly in his studies, had few friends and was bullied(欺负) for five years. “My teachers couldn’t have had a lower opinion of me,” he said. “I wasn’t even smart enough to rebel (反抗). The one thing I remember from the very earliest age was this desire to write. When I was 10 years old, I remember asking my parents to get me a typewriter for my birthday because I wanted to be a writer.”‎ Now, at 55, Horowitz is one of the world’s most successful children’s book authors. His Alex Rider series has sold more than 5 million copies, and the eighth book featuring the young spy, Crocodile Tears, came out this month.‎ The Alex Rider books tell the adventures of 14-year-old Alex Rider, an agent for the British intelligence agency .‎ Horowitz said he doesn’t try to write for kids; it just comes out that way. “I have a feeling it’s to do with purity and simplicity. I give as little information as is necessary to describe the room, the character in the room, and get on with the action,” he said.‎ That style has also made Horowitz a successful writer of television shows for adults in Britain because, he says, writing books for kids is a lot like writing television for grown-ups: In both cases, it’s all about entertaining people with a good story.‎ Now, Horowitz couldn’t be happier with his life. He sums up his success: “…you can be anything you want to be if you just believe in yourself. I do believe it completely.”‎ ‎21. The passage is mainly about _______.‎ A. Horowitz’s unhappy childhood B. Horowitz’s popular book – Alex Rider C. Horowitz, a successful children’s writer D. Horowitz’s special writing style ‎ ‎22. In the boarding school, Horowitz’s teachers _______.‎ A. showed great concern for him B. often abused and bullied him ‎ C. taught him how to write stories D. thought little of him ‎23. Which of the following is TRUE about Anthony Horowitz?‎ A. He was the beloved child of his family. ‎ B. He benefited a lot from boarding school.‎ C. He emphasizes the event rather than character in stories.‎ D. Although he is successful, he isn’t very happy. ‎ ‎24. What advice does Horowitz have about success for readers? ‎ A. Confidence is the key to success. B. Hardship teaches valuable lessons. ‎ C. Interest is the best teacher. D. Industry(勤奋) is the parent of success. ‎ B Two out of three teenagers in Britain have a desire to work abroad but most of them don't speak foreign languages. Government figures show that 58% of 11—18-year-olds in the UK have no foreign language skills, and this has a negative effect on the economy. Tom Burridge reports: Fact or fiction? Most British people are lazy when it comes to learning a foreign language. VOX POPS(公众典论): ‎ ‎ ---Fact. ---Why do you say that? ---Because we don't need to. Because everybody else speaks English. ---Foreigners make it too easy for you because they speak English when you’re abroad. Those views on the streets of London are backed up by figures out this week. The British Government found that 58% of 11- 18-year-olds in the UK do not speak a second language. However, two thirds of teenagers in Britain want to work abroad when they're older---the countries of choice being Italy, Spain, France or China. The British Government admits there is a problem---that not enough young people continue learning a second language when they leave school. Teresa Tinley from the country's national center of languages says it has serious effects on the economy: We are in a competitive global market and we need to be able to speak to our customers and our potential customers. Our trade is very much linked towards English-speaking countries. Our research shows that our exports are suffering. The research is seen as further evidence that most young people guess they can get by in a foreign country by speaking English---something the authorities in London want to change. ‎ ‎25. Life of the British young people working abroad. D. Ways to make the British teenagers learn foreign languages.‎ ‎ C Mr. Dawson was an old grouch (脾气坏的人), and everyone in town knew it. Kids knew not to go into his yard to pick an apple, because old Dawson, they said, would come after you with his gun.‎ One Friday, 12-year-old Janet was walking out with her friend Amy. They had to go by Dawson’s house, but as they got close Janet saw him sitting on his front porch (门廊) and suggested they cross over the street. Like most, she was scared of the old man.‎ ‎ Amy said not to worry. When they got close enough, Dawson looked up with his usual frown (皱眉), but when he saw it was Amy, he gave a broad smile.‎ Amy smiled back and told him Janet was staying overnight with her and they were going to listen to music and play games. Dawson told them that sounded fun, and gave them each an apple.‎ Later, Janet asked Amy, “Everyone says he’s the meanest man in town. How come he was so nice to us?”‎ ‎ Amy explained that when she first started walking past his house he wasn’t very friendly, but she pretended he was wearing an invisible (觉察不到的) smile and so she always smiled. It took a while, but one day he half-smiled back.‎ After a while, he started smiling real smiles and then talked to her. She said he always offers her an apple now, and is always very kind.‎ ‎“An invisible smile?” questioned Janet.‎ ‎“Yes,” answered Amy, “My grandma told me that if I pretended I wasn’t afraid and pretended he was smiling an invisible smile at me and I smiled back at him, sooner or later he would really smile.”‎ If we remember that everyone wears an invisible smile, we too will find that most people can’t resist our sunniness after a while.‎ We’re always on the go trying to achieve so much, aren’t we? It’s so easy to get caught up in everyday life that we forget how simply we can bring cheer to ourselves and others. Giving a smile takes so little effort; let’s make sure that we’re not the ones that others have to pretend are wearing invisible smiles.‎ ‎30. Which of the following is TRUE according to the article?‎ A. Mr. Dawson gave Janet an apple because she gave him a broad smile.‎ B. Mr. Dawson was angry because the children in town always stole apples from his yard.‎ C. Amy had never invited Janet to stay at her house before.‎ D. Most kids in town were scared of Mr. Dawson.‎ ‎31. What does the underlined sentence “he started smiling real smiles” mean?‎ A. Mr. Dawson started to accept Amy as a true friend with real feelings.‎ B. Mr. Dawson didn’t know how to smile until he met Amy.‎ C. Mr. Dawson didn’t believe in anyone in the town except Amy.‎ D. Mr. Dawson regretted that he had only half-smiled at Amy before.‎ ‎32. The last paragraph mainly tells us that ______.‎ A. we always look for too much in everyday life B. smiling can always bring us positive feelings C. we have to pretend that we are wearing an invisible smile D. if we want to accomplish something, we have to cheer each other up ‎ D Parties, iPods, concerts, movies, TV shows, video games, traffic. All of these things of the modern world make life entertaining and enjoyable. But our 21st-century lifestyle is also loud and, if we don’t take notice, it can have an effect on our hearing.‎ Most teenagers don’t think about hearing loss. But if you experience any of the following ‎ symptoms , you may already be hearing damaged: you make efforts to hear normal talk, you have to turn up the TV or radio so high that others complain, you watch other people’s expressions to understand what they are saying, you ask people to repeat themselves, you misunderstand what people are saying or you hear ringing in your ears.‎ iPods and other MP3 players are as common as the clothes you wear, and just as fashionable. But if you turn up an iPod to more than 60 percent of its maximum volume , and listen to music for more than an hour, you are asking for trouble. And, it does not matter if the music you play is classical, rock or heavy metal.‎ Some researchers find that young people who break the so-called 60-percent/60-minute rule in listening to iPods are at the risk of suffering hearing loss.‎ Why is an iPod dangerous? With ear buds placed directly in the ear canal and high-volume music played over a long period of time, it’s like working in a loud factory all day, being a maintenance person under a jet airplane or using a jackhammer(手提钻)on a building site.‎ Similarly, iPod music can cause a short time or permanent hearing damage. A loud iPod can cause a ruptured(破裂的)eardrum and, over time, may cause permanent damage to the tiny hairs in the inner ear. If these tiny hairs are damaged, they cannot effectively send sounds to the auditory nerves(听觉神经)that connect to the brain. If this happens, hearing loss becomes permanent.‎ ‎33. Which of the following shows that you are suffering hearing loss?‎ A. You are interested to listen to others’ talking.‎ B. You have to read others’ expressions to understand them.‎ C. You can only understand others over the phone.‎ D. You always think you hear the ringing of the phone.‎ ‎34. Which of the following is TRUE when you listen to music?‎ A. Listen at least an hour every time.‎ B. Turn up the volume to the highest level.‎ C. Keep the sound lower than 60% of its highest volume.‎ D. Choose classical, rock or heavy metal music.‎ ‎35. What is the correct order of causing permanent hearing loss?‎ a. The eardrum is broken. b. The auditory nerves cannot receive sounds.‎ c. Tiny hairs are damaged. d. Ear buds are placed directly in the ear canal.‎ e. High-volume music is played over a long time.‎ A. d-a-c-b-e B. e-c-a-b-d C. b-c-a-d-e D. d-e-a-c-b 第二节 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)‎ How to start reading classic literature The written word is one of the most powerful forms of expression.__36__ Many people find reading the classics difficult.
