‎ A ‎ Christmas is a time for eating great food, giving and receiving presents, and most importantly spending time with your family watching some classic Christmas movies.‎ The Grinch (2000)‎ This is a Christmas must-watch and one of Jim Carrey's best performances. It was also originally a nursery tale book written by Dr Seuss. It's the story of a green monster who wants to ruin Christmas but who in the end discovers the power of love and generosity. I promise it's a great film with plenty of laughs along the way.‎ Love Actually (2003)‎ While this is not a personal favourite of mine, people in the UK absolutely love this film. It has many featuring actors and actresses. It might be a little difficult to follow as there are complex plots, so I recommend watching a translated version or enabling subtitles (字幕) in your native language. However, the heart-warming elements of the film make it worth watching.‎ Home Alone (1990)‎ This amusing masterwork is one of my favourite films of all time. It tells the story of a boy, Kevin, who is left alone in his house when his large family forgets to take him on vacation with them. While the families are away, burglars try to rob the house and Kevin must protect his home by setting traps. The trips, falls and traps will have you laughing out loud as you watch a 10-year-old boy beat two grown men.‎ Miracle on 34th Street (1994)‎ You can't have Christmas in an English-speaking country without watching this movie. It's not funny like Home Alone or The Grinch, but it is incredibly touching. It's about a man who claims to be Santa, but nobody believes him except a lawyer and a little girl. The story-line may seem a little childish but you can enjoy it at any age.‎ ‎1.Which film is adapted from a fairy tale?‎ A.Home Alone B. The Grinch. C.Love Actually. D.Miracle on 34th Street.‎ ‎2. What is Home Alone mainly about?‎ A.An unsuccessful family vacation. B.A 10-year-old boy's practical jokes. ‎ C.A terrible suffering to a little boy. D.A boy protecting home by himself.‎ ‎3. Why is Miracle on 34th Street so popular?‎ A.For its famous actors and actresses. B.Because of its funny story.‎ C.Due to its childish storyline. D.Owing to its moving plots.‎ B As Simon Kindleysides, 34, took his first step in the London Marathon in April, he felt as if magic was in the air.‎ ‎ "As we were walking toward the first mile, we actually started joining all the runners," he said. "Everyone was on the streets, cheering, and that was a magical moment." As time went on, the crowds and other racers spread around. Kindleysides and his team of eight supporters continued walking.‎ ‎ Kindleysides, who is paralyzed(瘫痪的)from the waist down and typically uses a wheelchair, was equipped with an exoskeleton(体外骨骼)to help him walk. His supporters walked with him to change the batteries in his exoskeleton so he could keep moving.‎ ‎ In 2013, Kindleysides was diagnosed with a brain tumor (肿瘤) that was growing in a way that pressed on certain nerves, leading to him losing feeling in his legs. He was told he would never walk again. Before his paralysis, the London-based singer and dancer had "always wanted to run a marathon," he said, but he never made the plan to do so--until this year.‎ ‎ During the London Marathon, the last two miles were the hardest. "At that point, I was exhausted. It was freezing cold, and I was hurting emotionally," Kindleysides said. But he kept going. "I didn't want to let people down. I had a team of eight, and I was raising money for The Brain Tumour Charity," he said. "I didn't want to let them down, myself down, and I thought if I would get this far, I would have to continue."So he continued and made history as the first paralyzed man to complete the London Marathon on foot.‎ ‎ Then, recovering at home, he shared his accomplishment with his three children. "They used to say I'm the only dad in their whole school who's in a wheelchair, and now they say I'm their dad, the only one who has walked a marathon," he said.‎ ‎ Kindleysides is training to complete three more marathons next year, including the London Marathon again.‎ ‎4.Why did Kindleysides' supporters accompany him all the way?‎ A.To help change the batteries. B.To inspire him as a team.‎ C.To guide him along the road. D.To assist him with the wheelchair.‎ ‎5.What caused Kindleysides' disability?‎ A.An operation on his brain for the tumor. B.An accident in the previous marathon. ‎ C.Some nerves produced out of the tumor. D. The pressure from the brain tumor on the nerves.‎ ‎6.What partly supported Kindleysides to finish the hardest two-mile race?‎ A.The prize money for the winner. B.The strong desire to recover.‎ C.The kindness to help the charity. D.The belief to beat others. ‎ ‎7.What can we learn about Kindleysides?‎ A.He was once a successful actor.‎ B.He is ambitious for joining in London marathons once more.‎ C. His children feel a pity for him in the wheelchair now.‎ D.He was the first disabled man to complete the London Marathon.‎ C Scientists say they discovered an earth-like planet orbiting the star closest to our planet other than the sun. It is the closest planet ever found outside our solar system that could support life as we know it. This planet is just 4.2 light years away from us. It is so close that space scientists have compared it to a next door neighbor. They say it could be reached by an unmanned spacecraft before the end of the century. The newly-discovered planet is a little larger than the earth. Scientists have named it Proxima b. It orbits its sun, Proxima Centauri, once every 11days. ‎ Alan Boss is the Chairman of NASA’s advisory group for planet exploration. He told VOA that Proxima b not only confirms the discovery of a planet, but also increases the number of other possible “earths” by a huge amount. Boss said it is possible that most stars may have at least one earth-like planet orbiting them. ‎ This makes the possibility of living organisms increasingly likely. Boss said he believes human beings will prove that there is life in places other than the earth in his lifetime. “I am 65, ”he told VOA, “But I expect to still be alive when it happens.” ‎ Paul Butler works at the Carnegie Institution of Washington. He told VOA that finding Proxima b “makes the case concrete” that there are other planets where life could exist. Paul Butler said the ‎ researchers used two telescopes in different countries to look for possible planets like the earth. Discovering Proxima b, he believes, changes the world. ‎ ‎“This work has resulted in the discovery of hundreds of planets around the nearest stars, and now a potentially habitable planet around the nearest star is in the sky, ” Butler said. ‎ ‎8. Which of the following does the newly-discovered planet move around?‎ A. The sun. B. The earth. C. Proxima Centauri. D. Proxima b.‎ ‎9. What view do both Alan Boss and Paul Butler hold?‎ A. It is likely that life exists on other planets besides the earth B. There is at least one earth-like planet orbiting each star.‎ C. Proxime b can be used to help people find more earth-like planets. ‎ D. Discovering Proxim b will change the world, ‎ ‎10. What does the underlined per “This work” in the last paragraph refer to?‎ A. Exploring another sun. ‎ B. Discovering Proxima b. ‎ C. Using telescopes to find earth-like planets D. Researching life on other planets ‎11. What may be the best title for the text?‎ A. Stars with Earth-like Planets Orbiting.‎ B. Planet Exploration in the Universe C. A Neighboring Possible Earth-like Planet D. Potentially Habitable Planets D On average, Americans spend about 10 hours a day in front of a computer or other electronic devices and less than 30 minutes a day outdoors. That is a claim made by David Strayer, a professor of psychology at the University of Utah. In his 2017 TED Talk , Strayer explained that all this time spent with technology is making our brains tired.‎ Using an electronic device to answer emails, listen to the news and look at Facebook puts a lot of pressure on the front of the brain, which, Strayer explains, is important for critical thinking, problem-solving and decision-making.‎ So, it is important to give the brain a rest. And being in nature , Strayer claims , helps get a ‎ tired brain away from too much technology. More than 15,000 campers from around the world attended an international camping festival in September. That is when friends and family take time off and escape to nature for several days. They take walks, climb, explore , swim, sleep, eat and play. Camping may be just what a tired brain needs.‎ Take Carl for example. He lives in West Virginia and enjoys camping . He says that staying outdoors makes him feel at ease. It also prepares him for the work he must do. Kate Somers is another example who also lives in West Virginia. She says she enjoys camping with her husband and two children . She calls it a “regenerative” experience.‎ At the University of Utah , David Strayer has studied both short-term and long-term exposure to nature. He found that spending short amounts of time in nature without technology does calm the brain and helps it to remember better. However ,he found , it is the long-term contact with nature that does the most good. He and his research team found that spending three days in nature without any technology is enough time for the brain to fully relax and reset itself.‎ ‎12. What is David Strayer’s opinion ?‎ A. Electronic equipment should be quitted ‎ B. Americans dislike outdoor activities C. New technologies are a double-edged sword D. Electronic equipment brings great convenience ‎13. Why does Strayer insist we go outdoors?‎ A. To try another lifestyle B. To make better decisions. ‎ C. To refresh our brain D. To play with our family and friends ‎14. What does the underlined word “regenerative” mean?‎ A. Tiring B. Memorable C. Remarkable D. Reborn ‎15. Which is the proper title for the passage?‎ A. Electronic Equipment Harms the Brain ‎ B. Being in Nature Is Good for the Brain C. Tips on Using New Technologies ‎ D. Good Rest Develops Good Memory 第二节 (共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分) ‎ 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。‎ Although most parents don't like doing it after a long and exhausting workday, reading bedtime stories does make a positive influence on your child's emotional and mental health. ____16____‎ It helps to develop children's imagination.‎ Reading bedtime stories can develop your children's ability to form pictures or ideas in their mind.
