Britain’s oldest man made his first visit to London yesterday at the age of 110. Mr. John Evans had never found the time or the money to make the trip from his home in Fforestfach, near Swansea. But, when British Rail offered him an all-expenses-paid birthday trip to the capital, he just could not refuse.
He arrived at Paddington Station and smartly turned out in his best suit and favorite Panama hat with a red rose in his buttonhole. “It’s very exciting. There’s no doubt about it,” he said.
Until yesterday he had never been far from home, except for one trip to Aberdeen. “But I’ve been on the seas to that faraway land called Ilfracombe 21 miles from home,” he joked.
Mr. Evans, who spent 60 years working as a miner in South Wales, almost made the journey to London once before, at the turn of the century. “There was a trip to the White City but it was ten shillings return from Swansea—too much I thought. All my money went to the family then,” he said.

Have you ever watched a film about a pilot who’s been turned into a pig in 1930s Italy and is in love with a beautiful (human) singer? Or one where a talking cat helps a school girl to escape the king of the land of cats? Maybe you’ve seen a film with a
young witch( 女 魔 法 师 ) who starts a delivery service? If so then you’ve probably
discovered the joys of Studio Ghibli.
Often described as the Japanese answer to Disney, this animation studio has quietly been making great films since 1985 when it was founded by Hayao Miyazaki and Isao Takahata. However, Studio Ghibli is particularly known for artistic animation and unique plots which are popular with adults and children alike. In the last thirty years their films have won international awards and have become recognized for their creativity. Hollywood stars including Anne Hathaway, Christian Bale and Emily Mortimer have all shown their approval and provided English language voices for characters.
The most famous film by the studio is spirited Away, which is the most successful Japanese film ever, making $270,000,000 across the world. It also won an Oscar for Best Animated Feature along with numerous other awards. The story follows a ten-year-old girl, Chihiro Ogino, as she accidentally enters another world full of spirits
and monsters( 怪 物 ) while on the way to a new house with her parents. After her
parents are turned into pigs she becomes trapped here and to leave she must escape an evil witch. Like many Studio Ghibli films there’s lots of Japanese folklore(民间传说)
in the plot which makes for a really great and unusual film.
My personal favourites include The Cat Returns(featuring the king of the cats) and Porco Rosso(with the pilot who's a pig), but there are seventeen films in total to watch whatever your age or nationality.

When we think of flavor ( 味道), it is our noses and taste buds ( 味蕾) that we think of first. Isn’t it natural that taste and smell are the main senses when we enjoy food and drink? Well, perhaps not. “Now we are beginning to understand that flavor depends on parts of the brain that involve not only taste, smell and touch, but vision.

The findings of a German study seem to back this up. Its subjects said wine tasted
50 percent sweeter if drunk under red light, rather than under blue or white.
In a study released in mid-December, scientists found that the color of your coffee mug can change the way your coffee tastes, reported The Washington Post. And it is not just the color of the food that matters. Specifically, the white mug was associated with a more “intense” (or bitter) tasting cup of coffee, and the clear glass mug was not.
The blue mug, meanwhile, was “kind of an intermediate ( 中等的)”, Charles

head of the research laboratory at Oxford University, told the newspaper.
The opposite was true for perceived sweetness — those who took part tasted less sweetness when drinking from the white mug than they did when drinking from both the blue and clear glass mugs.

I hope we are going to be together again this year. My elder brother is going to arrive before Christmas Eve. Then we are going to put up the tree in the living room, and we are going to put the presents under the tree. We won’t
