Soon came another shock that my husband left me forever because of lung cancer. I felt I had just lost everything that ever mattered to me. ‎ I voiced these feelings to a friend, who took me to a pet store. The store was holding an adoption day with shelters. I looked at and held several puppies (小狗),wondering which to choose. Then I met Maggie. She looked at me with the saddest eyes I had ever seen, then laid her head on my shoulder and slept. I immediately decided to save her! ‎ Maggie adjusted well. I, however, was still adjusting. One night, thoughts of losing everything rushed through my head again. So depressed was I that I felt the only solution was to end my life. With a bottle of medicine in one hand and Maggie on my lap, I took the pills. Through my tear-filled eyes I looked down at Maggie to tell her I was sorry. The look on her face I will never be able to explain. It looked as if her eyes said, “Don’t leave me; I need you just as you needed me.” It was then that I ran to the bathroom to vomit up the pills. The rest of the night I sat on the couch holding Maggie and thanking her for saving me. ‎ Since that night I have had a love for her that I never knew possible. She never leaves my side when I am at home. She has taught me to smile and laugh. Together with Maggie, I feel I can get through anything. ‎ ‎24.The author got Maggie from _________. ‎ ‎ A.a friend B.her husband C.a pet store D.an adoption center ‎25.The underlined phrase “vomit up” can be replaced by _________.‎ ‎ A. pick up B.take up C.throw up D.break up ‎ ‎26.Why did the author feel depressed? ‎ ‎ A.Because her husband had taken her cats away. ‎ ‎ B.Because she couldn’t find any solution to her problem.‎ ‎ C.Because she couldn’t adjust to living with Maggie. ‎ ‎ D.Because she had lost everything important to her.‎ ‎27.What can be a suitable title for the text? ‎ ‎ A.My favorite pet dog. B. Who saved who? C. What is love? D. Love for life.‎ C Shyness is the cause of much unhappiness for a great many people. Shy people are anxious and self-conscious; that is, they are concerned with their own appearance and actions too much. Negative thoughts are constantly occurring in their minds: What kind of impression am I making? Do they like me? Do I sound stupid? Am I wearing unattractive clothes?‎ It is obvious that such uncomfortable feelings must affect people unfavorably. A person's self-concept is reflected in the way he or she behaves and the way a person behaves affects other people’s reactions. In general, the way people think about themselves has a deep effect on all areas of their lives.‎ Shy people, who have low respect, are likely to be passive and easily influenced by others. They need faith that they are doing “the right thing”. Shy people are very sensitive to criticism. It makes them feel inferior. They also find it difficult to be pleased by praises because they believe they are unworthy of praise. A shy person may respond to a praise with a statement like this one: “You’re just saying that to make me feel good, I know it's not true.” It is clear that, while self-awareness is a healthy quality, overdoing it is harmful. ‎ Can shyness be completely got rid of, or at least reduced? Fortunately, people can overcome shyness with determination since shyness goes hand in hand with lack of self respect. It is important for people to accept their weakness as well as their strengths. Each one of us has his or her own characteristics. We are interested in our own personal ways. The better we understand ‎ ourselves, the easier it becomes to live up to our chances for a rich and successful life. ‎ ‎28. They are estimated to be close to one million years and are believed to be the oldest evidence of humans in northern Europe.‎ Footprints of what appears to be a group of ancient humans were discovered on a beach in Norfolk, in eastern Britain. They may be about 500,000 years older than the earliest footprints previously found in the country. The 3D images and a model of one of the imprints(印迹) were unveiled on Friday at a news conference at the British Museum, in London.‎ The museum’s archeologist Nick Ashton described the moment last May when he realized the footprints were left by a prehistoric man. “It was only when the overhead views were emailed through to me back in my office that I suddenly looked at it and opened up the file and I thought, “This is absolutely amazing. You know, there is no doubt that they really are human footprints,” he said.‎ Nick said the new discovery will alter the understanding of early human history in Europe. Liverpool John Moores University researcher Isabelle de Groote analysed the prints. “ The spread of the footprint size gives us an indication that we have children, a number of children and then probably some adults there with at least one, probably one male,” she said.‎ It is not known how the early humans survived in the cold environment of ancient northern Europe. Scientists say a million years ago, Britain was joined to continental Europe and they believe that the individuals who left the footprints were related to Homo sapiens’ ancestors called the Pioneer Man, known to have inhabited in a warmer climate.‎ ‎32. So from 11 o’clock, I’m free to enjoy the weekend!‎ Text 10‎ W: Well, for those of you who went out today 18 I don’t have to tell you it was clear, but muggy(闷热而潮湿的)for most of the state, with the high temperature in the low to mid ‎90’‎s. The city of Elkview had the high for the day of 97 degrees. And that’s hot. I’m glad I’m working indoors today!‎ ‎17 For those of you planning outdoor activities tomorrow, you can expect fair skies for most of Saturday with temperatures in the high ‎90’‎s. However, things might change by Saturday evening with a storm front moving in. 19 We can expect light scattered showers over the northern part of the state bringing slightly cooler temperatures in the ‎80’‎s, but this rain should taper off(减少)by mid Sunday morning. It will be partly cloudy for most of the morning, but these clouds should move out by mid-afternoon. ‎ ‎20 Skies should be clear Sunday night for those wanting to catch a glimpse of the partial lunar eclipse(月蚀). It should start at 10:47 pm. And that’s all for today’s weather.‎ ‎ ‎
