But these common writing tools have a long and interesting history.‎ ‎ The first example of a pencil-type instrument came from ancient Rome. There, a thin piece of metal was used to write words on an early paper. Long, thin pieces of lead(铅) were also used to make marks on the page.‎ ‎ Around 1564 a huge amount of graphite(石墨) was discovered near Cambria, England. The solid graphite was mistakenly considered to be a type of lead. Locals happily realized it provided a perfect way to mark their sheep. The graphite was also easily cut into sticks but very soft. People tried looking for other materials to provide a covering for them.‎ ‎ But then a couple from Italy thought of a better idea. They hollowed(挖空) out a wooden stick and then placed a graphite stick inside it. This created a wooden holder for the graphite. In the late 1500s, someone in Germany glued two wooden halves together around a graphite stick. The concept is still used today.‎ ‎ By the late 1860s in America, pencils were in great demand. American companies began designing machines to produce pencils in large numbers. It helped meet the need and cut the cost of pencils by 50 percent.‎ ‎ Several people are said to be responsible for inventing the mechanical pencil. In 1915, however, Japan’s Tokuji Hayakawa created a mechanical pencil similar to the one used now. Today both kinds of pencils are very popular with the wooden pencil being number one. More than 6 billion wooden pencils are made in 40 different countries each year. ‎ ‎25. What do we know about graphite according to the next?‎ ‎ A. It is soft and can be easily cut into sticks . B. It was used to write words in ancient Rome. ‎ C. It could not be used to mark sheep. D. It is in the form of liquid. ‎ ‎26. How is the text mainly developed? ‎ ‎ A. By giving examples. B. By making comparisons.‎ ‎ C. by following time order. D. by showing detailed data.‎ ‎27. What may be the best title for the text?‎ ‎ A. The relationship between graphite and pencils. B. Colorful history of different writing tools. ‎ C. The origin of mechanical pencils. D. The history of pencils.‎ C John Smith was a famous English soldier, author and explorer.‎ Smith was born in January, 1580. He attended King Edward VI Grammar School between 1592 and 1595. He set off to the sea at the young age of 16 just after his father’s death. At the Mediterranean Sea, he fought against the Ottoman Turks in the Long Turkish War. He is believed to have killed several Turkish leaders. This was the reason why he was Knighted(授予爵位) by the Transylvanian Prince and also given a horse and a coat of arms that showed three Turks’ heads.‎ In 1606, Captain John Smith joined the Virginia Company of London. They decided to set sail in 3 small ships. In April 1607, the English finally arrived at Jamestown. Four months later the food sources became insufficient. What was worse, many diseases troubled them. By September over 60 people had died.‎ Later, in 1609, life in Jamestown became better for a period of 3 months. However, in April, they found mice had destroyed all the stored corn. This made it very difficult for Smith and his group to get food. In May, 1609, close to 500 people were sent there. Yet, many of them continued to die from different illnesses. Only about 150 of the 500 survived winter. The Virginia Company continued to give help and send more settlers in order to support Jamestown.‎ In 1608, during summer, Smith left Jamestown and went to explore Chesapeake Bay and search for food. He covered around 3,000 miles. He later suffered a severe knee injury and had to go back to England.‎ In 1614, John Smith voyaged to the coasts of Maine and the Massachusetts Bay. He later named this place “ New England ”.‎ ‎28. At the Mediterranean Sea, What’s John Smith probably famous for ? ‎ A. His honesty.   B. His bravery. C. His knowledge.  D. His determination. ‎ ‎29. Because he had finished his work ahead of time. ‎ C. Because he had to receive treatment in England. ‎ D. Because he didn’t achieve anything in Jamestown. ‎ D To learn about how families manage a child’s screen time, researchers interviewed 27 families with children aged between 1 and 5 about how they limit and end a child’s viewing time. Parents reported that their children were significantly more upset when given a warning that screen time was about to end than when screen time was stopped without a warning.‎ Julie Kientz, associate professor of human-centered design and engineering at the University of Washington, said the researchers had a theory: maybe instead of easing a child’s transition(‎ 过渡) away from screens, a two-minute warning prepares the child to fight it. “This is definitely the age when parents are trying to avoid power struggles and kids are very welcoming them,” said Dr. Kientz. “We think possibly that the two-minute warning made them ready for knowing that there was going to be this battle.”‎ Ms. Hiniker, another researcher, said programs that show previews(预告)immediately after a show is over can make it difficult for a child to turn away from a screen. Parents were also successful in easing transitions by blaming the technology, announcing the Wi-Fi was broken, or pretending that a program a child watched on vacation was not available at home.‎ One final surprise for the researchers, and for the parents who participate in the research: in general, the transitions away from screens went remarkably well. And in about one in four screen sessions, children turned screens off on their own, something that many parents interviewed said had never happened before — suggesting that parents may be putting too much weight on a few negative experiences when they think about screen time. “About 80% of transitions were totally fine,” said Ms.Hiniker. “In fact in most cases kids were happy about it – they were excited to do whatever was coming next.”‎ ‎32. What did these parents think of warning in Para. 1?‎ A. They helped things go better. ‎ B. They didn’t work for children.‎ C. They did harm to children’s development. ‎ D. They prevented children from falling into bad habits.‎ ‎33. What plays an important role in children’s fight against parents?‎ A. The point in time of the warnings parents give.‎ B. The length of their screen time.‎ C. The quality of their age group. ‎ D. People’s nature to disagree. ‎ ‎34. What is to blame for children’s unwilling transitions according to Ms. Hiniker?‎ A. The previews of programs. B. The unavailable programs.‎ C. The desire for power. D. The broken Wi-Fi.‎ ‎35. What can we learn from the research results?‎ A. Parents feel optimistic about the situation. ‎ B. Parents had a wrong impression about the situation.‎ C. Parents will allow their children longer screen time in the future.‎ D. Parents will get fatter when worrying too much about screen time.‎ 第二节 (共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)‎ 根据短文内容,从文后选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。‎ Most of the people grow up, admiring a celebrity(名人)in their life- who is famous, especially in the field of films, music or sports. 36 Well, some people may be interested in sports and others may be interested in films or music.
