According to a new survey(调查) by the National Sleep Foundation, 51% of kids aged 10 to 18 go to bed at 10 pm or later on school nights, even though they have to get up early. Last year the Foundation reported that nearly 60% of 7- to 12-year-olds said they felt tired during the day, and 15% said they had fallen asleep at school.‎ How much sleep you need depends a lot on your age. Babies need a lot of rest: most of them sleep about 18 hours a day! Adults need about eight hours. For most school-age children, ten hours is ideal(理想的). But the new National Sleep Foundation survey found that 35% of 10- to 12-year-olds get only seven or eight hours. And guess what almost half of the surveyed kids said they do before bedtime? Watch TV.‎ ‎“More children are going to bed with TVs on, and there are more opportunities ‎ to stay awake, with more homework, the Internet and the phone,” says Dr. Mary Carskadon, a sleep researcher at Brown‎ University Medical ‎School. She says these activities at bedtime can get kids all excited and make it hard for them to calm down and sleep. Other experts say part of the problem is chemical. Changing levels of body chemicals called hormones(荷尔蒙,激素)not only make teenagers’ bodies develop adult characteristics(特征), but also make it hard for teenagers to fall asleep before 11 pm.‎ Because sleepiness is such a problem for teenagers, some school districts have decided to start high school classes later than they used to. Three years ago, schools in Edina‎, ‎Minnesota, changed the start time from 7:25 am to 8:30 am. Students, parents and teachers are pleased with the results.‎ ‎21. What is the new National Sleep Foundation survey on?‎ A. American kids’ sleeping habits. B. Teenagers’ sleep-related diseases.‎ C. Activities to prevent sleeplessness. D. Learning problems and lack of sleep.‎ ‎22. How many hours of sleep do 11-year-olds need every day?‎ A. 7 hours. B. 8 hours. C. 10 hours. D. 18 hours.‎ ‎23. Why do teenagers go to sleep late according to Carskadon?‎ A. They are affected by certain body chemicals. B. They tend to do things that excite them.‎ C. They follow their parents’ examples. D. They don’t need to go to school early.‎ B One night I was sitting in my room half–listening as my 15 year – old brother fought with my 12 year – old brother Kevin. I didn’t pay attention when Kevin rushed up the stairs with the hurt on his face.‎ About 20 minutes later, as I was walking upstairs I heard Kevin crying inside the bathroom. I knocked on the door and asked, “Hey Kevin, do you want to talk?”‎ No response. I tried again, “Why don’t you come out of there?”‎ Again, no response.‎ So, joking around, I grabbed a stack of index cards and a pencil and wrote, “If you don’t want to talk, we can write notes to each other.”‎ An hour later I was still sitting on the floor outside the bathroom with two stacks of index cards in front of me. One was blank and one was cards from Kevin on which he had translated all his yucky feelings into words for me. As I read one of Kevin’s notes, tears came to my eyes. It said, “Nobody in this family cares about me. I’m not the youngest, and I’m not the oldest, and I’m not talented. Tommy thinks I’m stupid and Dad wishes he had the other Kevin as a kid because he’s better at basketball. And you’re never around to even notice me.”‎ Tears came to my eyes again as I wrote back to him. “You know Kevin, I really do love you and I’m sorry I don’t always show it. I am here for you and you are loved in this family.”‎ There was no response for a while, but then I heard a tearing sound coming from inside the bathroom. Kevin, who had run out of index cards wrote on a torn – up paper cup, “Thanks.”‎ I wrote back “For what?” It returned to me with “Loving me” written on it. Since then, I try my best never to half – notice my family members anymore. Kevin and I have closer relationship now, and sometimes when one of us notices that the other is upset we’ll smile and say “Write it on a paper cup.”‎ ‎24. Why did Kevin stay inside the bathroom alone crying?‎ ‎ A. Because he lost in the fight with Tommy. ‎ B. Because the author didn’t help him win Tommy.‎ ‎ C. Because he felt no love from the family members.‎ ‎ D. Because he hurt him when rushing up the stairs.‎ ‎25. The underlined word “yucky” (Para.6) most probably means “ ”.‎ ‎ A. unpleasant B. exciting C. doubtful D. frightening ‎26. What could be the reason that Kevin’s Dad doesn’t like him?‎ ‎ A. What did the author learn from the incident?‎ ‎ A. It’s hard to comfort young brothers at home.‎ ‎ B. It’s dangerous to half – notice someone in the family.‎ ‎ C. It’s important for family members to show their love.‎ ‎ D. The best way to communicate with family members is by writing.‎ C A teacher from Relax Kids in Tamworth‎, ‎UK, used two apples to show her students the damaging, and often unseen, consequences of bullying. And her post about the powerful lesson has gone viral.‎ Rosie Dutton explained that during one of her classes she introduced the children to two red apples. What the kids didn't know was that prior to the lesson, Dutton had repeatedly dropped one of the apples on the floor. And yet, on the outside at least, both apples looked perfect. "I picked up the apple I'd dropped on the floor and started to tell the children how I disliked this apple, that I thought it was disgusting, it was a horrible color and the stem was just too short," Dutton wrote. ‎ She then encouraged the students to do the same. Some of the children looked at her like she was “crazy”, but the students passed the apple around the circle, calling it names.‎ Continuing the exercise, the teacher then passed the second apple around the circle. This apple, however, was showered with comments like: “Your skin is beautiful," and "what a beautiful colour you are."‎ Dutton then showed the students both apples once again, highlighting that "there was no change, both apples still looked the same." ‎ That is, until she cut them open. "The apple we'd said unkind words to was bruised and all mushy inside," she said.‎ There was, she said, an immediate "light bulb" moment for her students. "They really got it. What we saw inside that apple, the bruises, the mush and the broken bits is what is happening inside every one of us when someone mistreats us with their words or actions."‎ Dutton explained how important it is to teach children to stand up for one another, and to stop any form of bullying.‎ ‎“Let’s create a generation of kind caring children,” the teacher wrote. “The tongue has no bones, but is strong enough to break a heart. So be careful with your words.”‎ ‎28. What had the teacher done to the first apple before the lesson?‎ ‎ A. She had introduced it to the kids B. She had damaged it purposely ‎ C. What’s the purpose of the teacher’s using two apples in class?‎ ‎ A. To draw the kids’ attention B. To explain her personal preferences ‎ C. To make a comparison between them D. To help the kids understand the results of bullying D When do you become an adult, a grown-up? At eighteen? Twenty-one? Thirty? Adulthood may seem a long way away to you, but the fact is that you are in the process of becoming an adult right now. The changes are so gradual that you may not notice them, but you can be sure that they’re happening.‎ When you were a child, a parent or older relative probably bought your clothes ‎ and helped you clean up your room. Now you are likely to care for your bedroom, and to share other housework. You may once have had trouble getting your homework finished on time. By now, you may have learned to rush yourself. You know how much time you need. Do you remember begging your parents to stop for ice cream, or take an after-school job when you want money for a new clock radio? Of course, you don’t always plan your time and your money perfectly. But you’re learning.‎ As you get older, you have more privileges (特权) and more responsibilities. You may baby-sit for younger brothers and sisters, help cook dinner, and do odd jobs to contribute to the family income. You may get to stay up to watch a late movie on television, sit in on adult conversations, take subways and buses alone, or go on camping trips with your friends. Eventually, you will have a job and an apartment of your own. You’ll become a voter and perhaps a husband or wife, maybe even a parent. But doing things adults do does not necessarily mean you will be wiser, braver, or more self-assured (自信). It takes time to gain knowledge and build self-confidence. Adults need to test themselves in the world, just as you do as a teenager. Being an adult is a continual process of growth.‎ ‎32. Which of the following can’t show that you have more responsibilities as you get older?‎ ‎ A. to stay up to watch a late movie on TV B. to baby-sit for younger brothers and sisters ‎ C. to help cook dinner D. to do odd jobs to contribute to the family income ‎33. The best title for this passage may be _____.‎ A. Becoming an Adult B. It is No Good Becoming an Adult C. Becoming a Voter D. Adulthood Is a Long Way Away to You ‎34. Which of the following is NOT true according to the passage?‎ A. You may not realize you’re growing up because changes are gradual.‎ B. You used to beg your parents for ice cream when you were young.‎ C. Even if you are quite grown up, you still need to acquire knowledge.‎ D. People will never be wise, brave or self-assured.‎ 第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)‎ 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。‎ Easy Ways to Keep Your Brain Sharp ‎ Everyone is forgetful, but as we age, we start to feel like our brains are slowing down a bit—and that can be a very annoying thing. __36___Read on for some tips worth trying.‎ ‎ 1. ___37_____ ‎ ‎ People who regularly made plans and looked forward to upcoming events had a 50 percent reduced chance of Alzheimers disease (早老性痴呆症),according to a recent study. ___38____Something as simple as setting a goal to have a weekly coffee date with a friend will do. We have made a survey--"Who do you turn to when in trouble?" Here are the results.‎ Most of the students will go to their classmates or friends when in trouble. They're almost of the same age, so they can talk with and understand each other easily. Some students will tell their teachers or parents about their troubles and ask for their help as the teachers and parents have rich experience and love them very much. They can be trusted by these students. Only a few students solve their problems all by themselves. They hate to talk with others and can’t get on well with others. They have few friends.‎ In my opinion, when in trouble we’d better ask our teachers, parents, friends or classmates for help.‎
